Do Oriente Médio ao sul do Brasil : a imigração de sírios e libaneses no Rio Grande do Sul (1890-1949)

Abstract

O artigo trata da história e da memória da imigração sírio-libanesa no Rio Gran-de do Sul, procurando situar este imigrante nas dinâmicas políticas, econômi-cas e sociais do estado, correspondentes ao fim do século XIX e início do século XX. O período que estudamos, ambienta o leitor nos locais em que se inseriram os imigrantes médio-orientais, ou seja, em áreas distintas do Rio Grande do Sul, por exemplo: colônias, novas colônias, regiões sul, central e norte, litoral, capital e fronteiras. Recorremos a diversas fontes entre pesquisa em arquivos históricos e entrevistas com descendentes de sírios e libaneses. Ainda veremos um inventário bibliográfico destacando a presença árabe no Rio Grande do Sul, produzidas pela literatura gaúcha.

The paper deals with the memory and history of the Syrian-Lebanese immigration to Rio Grande do Sul State/Brazil, seeking to situate the middle-eastern immigrants into the polit-ical, economic and social dynamics of the state, during the late nineteenth and early twenti-eth centuries. The period studied illustrates to the reader the places where these immigrants were placed, that is, in distinct areas of Rio Grande do Sul, for example: settlements and new settlements areas, southern border, central and northern regions, coastal, capital and western border of the state. We have done extensive research in historical archives but also interviewing community members. The text also provides an inventory over the literature produced locally about the Syrian and Lebanese immigration and the Arab presence in the southernmost State of Brazil.
