Produção e percepção do apagamento variável de /R/ em coda silábica no português de Porto Alegre (RS)

Abstract

O artigo examina a produção, percepção e avaliação linguística do apagamento variável de /R/ em coda silábica no português de Porto Alegre (RS) (mulhe[ɾ]~mulhe[Ø], po[r]que ~ po[Ø]que, dirigi[r] ~ dirigi[Ø]) com base na Teoria da Variação (LABOV, 2008) e em teorias de percepção, atitude e avaliação linguística (LAMBERT et al., 1960, GILES; BILLINGS, 2004, PRESTON, 2003, ECKERT, 2004, 2005, 2008). A revisão de estudos anteriores (CALLOU; LEITE; MORAES, 2002, MONARETTO, 2002, OUSHIRO; MENDES, 2014) sugere que o apagamento de /R/ em coda seja uma mudança em progresso nas variedades de português brasileiro. Os objetivos do artigo são (1) esclarecer os fatores linguísticos e sociais correlacionados ao apagamento do /R/ em coda silábica no português de Porto Alegre, (2) verificar se o apagamento possui significados sociais. Realizam-se duas análises: quantitativa (TAGLIAMONTE, 2007) com o software R, em dados de fala de 16 entrevistas sociolinguísticas do LínguaPOA (2015-2019); e um teste-piloto de percepção e avaliação linguística com a técnica dos estímulos pareados (LAMBERT et al., 1960). A análise quantitativa revela que o apagamento de /R/ em Porto Alegre é condicionado predominantemente por variáveis linguísticas e parece estar em estabilidade na comunidade. O teste-piloto indica que o apagamento é percebido e avaliado no contraste com o não apagamento, sugerindo que a variável faça parte de um sistema de significação social. O mapeamento do campo indexical dos significados sociais da variável (ECKERT, 2004, 2008) sugere que o apagamento indexa significados sociais relacionados a personae menos cultas e mais informais.

This article is about the production, perception and linguistic evaluation of the variable deletion of /R/ in syllabic coda in Porto Alegre Portuguese (mulhe[ɾ]~mulhe[Ø] ‘woman’, po[r]que ~ po[Ø]que ‘because’, dirigi[r] ~ dirigi[Ø], ‘to drive’) based on the Theory of Variation and Change (LABOV, 2008) and on theories of perception, attitude and linguistic evaluation (LAMBERT et al., 1960, GILES; BILLINGS, 2004, PRESTON, 2003, ECKERT, 2004, 2005, 2008). A review of previous studies (CALLOU; LEITE; MORAES, 2002, MONARETTO, 2002, OUSHIRO; MENDES, 2014) suggests that the deletion of /R/ in coda is a change in progress in Brazilian Portuguese varieties. The objectives of the article are (1) to clarify the linguistic and social factors correlated to the deletion of /R/ in syllabic coda in Porto Alegre Portuguese, (2) to verify whether the deletion has social meanings. Two analyses were carried out: quantitative (TAGLIAMONTE, 2007) with the R software, on speech data from 16 sociolinguistic interviews from LinguaPOA (2015-2019); and a pilot test of perception and linguistic evaluation with the matched-guise technique (LAMBERT et al., 1960). Quantitative analysis reveals that the deletion of /R/ in Porto Alegre is predominantly conditioned by linguistic variables and appears to be in stability in the community. The pilot test indicates that deletion is perceived and evaluated in contrast to non-deletion and suggests that the variable has social meanings. Mapping the variable's social meanings to its indexical field (ECKERT, 2004, 2008) suggests that deletion indexes social meanings related to less educated and more informal personae.
