A essência dupla da linguagem : materialidade gestual em questão

Abstract

O objetivo desta tese é delinear uma concepção linguística de gestualidade e apontar os efeitos dessa reflexão à teorização de base saussuriana. Considerando o diálogo entre gesto e língua (de sinais), buscamos comprovar que a teoria linguística saussuriana, em se constituindo a partir da suspensão da noção de materialidade, permite lidar com a gestualidade humana. Com base em uma leitura que aborda os aspectos teóricos, metodológicos e analíticos da reflexão esboçada por Ferdinand de Saussure no manuscrito Da Essência Dupla da Linguagem, visa-se evidenciar que as formulações ao princípio da duplessência da linguagem conservam a noção de materialidade e possibilitam a consideração do aspecto gestual enquanto potencialmente significante. Dado que o tema de pesquisa da presente tese versa sobre a gestualidade, investiga-se também, em trabalhos diversos, principalmente da área de Estudos do Gesto, as abordagens e concepções ao gesto por eles mobilizadas. Destaca-se que a ancoragem a conceitos selecionados da linguística de base saussuriana tem uma dupla função ao longo da tese porque, ao mesmo tempo em que serve de referencial teórico, se constitui também objeto de investigação. A gestualidade está diretamente implicada na significação das línguas de sinais porque sua materialidade é constituída por gestos. Sob a ótica do princípio da duplessência da linguagem, conclui-se que a gestualidade pode ser linguística, uma vez que aspecto gestual e significação integram o geral da língua e o específico da materialidade.

The aim of this thesis is to outline a linguistic conception of gestuality and to point out the effects of this reflection on a Saussurian-based theoretical approach. Considering the dialogue between gesture and (sign) language, we seek to prove that the Saussurian linguistic theory, in constituting itself from the suspension of the notion of materiality, allows to approach human gestures. Based on a reading that addresses the theoretical, methodological and analytical aspects of the reflection sketched by Ferdinand de Saussure in the manuscript on the Dual Essence of Language, it is intended to show that the formulations to the principle of doublessence of language preserve the notion of materiality and enable the consideration of the gestural aspect as potentially significant. Given that the research theme of the present thesis deals with gestuality, various works are also investigated, mainly from the area of Gesture Studies, as the approaches and conceptions to gesture mobilized by them. The approach to selected concepts from Saussurian-based linguistics has a dual function throughout the thesis because, while serving as a theoretical framework, it is also an object of investigation. Gestuality is directly involved in the signification of sign languages because its materiality consists of gestures. From the perspective of the principle of doublessence of language, it is concluded that gestuality can be linguistic, since the gestural aspect and meaning integrate the language generality and the materiality specificity.
