Throughout our history, we have witnessed several monetary systems, so that each of them was surpassed by another that was better able to meet the needs of society. There are records of several crises in these monetary systems, which sometimes caused the world economy to collapse. As a result of these shocks, there were several discussions on monetary policies and the role of governments in the economy. But, for a group of people, linked to technology, the controlling role that governments played under the supply of coins, should no longer be the only option for people to have money, and it is with this thought that, through encrypted technology, the world's first digital currency is created. With the arrival of so-called cryptocurrencies, there was a rush to understand what it was about, how it worked and the result of its insertion into the economy. The truth is that this race is not over, quite the contrary; it is still in the beginning. Many works are published about these new assets, whether in the form of books, articles, or monographs, several interested in the subject try in some way to decipher the peculiarities of digital currencies in various fields. This work aims to demonstrate the evolution of monetary systems until we get to cryptocurrencies, explain succinctly how they were created and how they work and update the discussion around the role of cryptocurrency in the economy, addressing both international and national literature, opinions of regulators around the world and at the end of the analysis, in a discreet way, outline a perspective for cryptocurrencies in Brazil.en
