Voices from the West of Ireland : nacionalismo irlandês nas coleções folclóricas de Lady Augusta Gregory

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem o objetivo de compreender o papel da folclorista e escritora Lady Augusta Gregory (1852-1932) no movimento nacionalista irlandês, a partir de um olhar sobre sua trajetória e, em particular, de uma das histórias trazidas em uma obra representativa de sua recopilação folclórica: os relatos incluídos em seu Visions and Beliefs in the West of Ireland (1921) sobre a misteriosa Bridget Ellen “Biddy” Early, curandeira que ganhou fama entre os condados de Galway e Clare, no oeste da Irlanda. O trabalho se propõe a demonstrar a maneira pela qual Lady Gregory, em sua vida e escrita, contribui para o estabelecimento de uma “cultura nacional” irlandesa, registrando as crenças, superstições e tradições orais de uma parte do país que, com o passar dos anos, se tornariam constitutivas de uma noção de Irishness com a qual os habitantes da ilha poderiam se identificar em meio ao processo de independência - e em contraste com as identificações impostas pelo governo britânico. A dissertação se organiza em três partes interdependentes, partindo da trajetória de Isabella Augusta Persse até se tornar Lady Augusta Gregory, analisando a seguir as suas relações com outros intelectuais e folcloristas do período e sua participação no Irish Cultural Revival, e culminando com as representações trazidas em Visions and Beliefs in the West of Ireland, que virão a se tornar a base de muitos outros estudos folclóricos e narrativas nacionalistas nas décadas seguintes à publicação original da obra.

This dissertation aims at comprehending the role of Lady Augusta Gregory (1852-1932) as a folklorist and writer in the Irish nationalist movement considering her life trajectory and in one of the stories from Visions and Beliefs in the West of Ireland (1921) which focuses on the mysterious Bridget Ellen “Biddy” Early, a wise woman who became famous in the counties of Galway and Clare through the 19th century. This work intends to demonstrate the ways in which Lady Gregory, through her life and writing, contributed for the establishment of a Irish “national culture” by turning into written word the beliefs, superstitions and oral tradition from a part of Ireland. These texts, as years went by, would become an essential part of the country’s notion of Irishness through which the population could establish a sense of common identity that contrasted with the imposing British dominance over culture in Ireland. The dissertation is organised in three interdependent parts, starting with the life trajectory of Isabella Augusta Persse becoming Lady Augusta Gregory, thus analysing her relationship with intellectuals and folklorists at the time and her participation in the Irish Cultural Revival. This participation would have as a result the representations presented in Visions and Beliefs in the West of Ireland and its influence on other folkloric studies and nationalist narratives over the following decades.
