| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study was to assess the colonization of Lactobacillus spp., Streptococcus mutans, and Bifidobacterium spp. in the oral cavity of babies during the first 24 months of life. Forty five babies were evaluated at 0 (T1), 3 (T2), 6 (T3), 12 (T4) and 24 months of age (T5) in the Family Healthy Center Parque dos Maias, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Questionnaires recorded data on sociodemographic characteristics, type of birth, type of milk feeding (breast or formula) and oral hygiene, and was answered by the responsible for each baby. In intraoral examination was rated the number of erupted teeth, and collected samples of saliva from the oral cavity of each baby using calibrated sterile microbiological loops. The sample was diluted and spread onto plates containing the specific culture media. Data were analyzed using the Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE). Means of log10 CFU / mL of Lactobacillus spp. (T1 = 3.25 ± 2.55; T2 = 2.84 ± 2.47; T3 = 2.45 ± 2.52; T4 = 2.03 ± 2.28; T5 = 1.95 ± 2.92 ), Streptococcus mutans (T1 = 1.96 ± 2.24; T2 = 1.39 ± 1.91; T3 = 1.76 ± 2.25; T4 = 2.30 ± 2.44; T5 = 3.10 ± 1.89) and Bifidobacterium spp. (T1 = 2.65 ± 2.74; T2 = 2.21 ± 2.61; T3 = 3.12 ± 2.85; T4 = 2.89 ± 2.75; T5 = 2.57 ± 2.60 ) were not statistically significantly different during the periods of follow-up. Sex, type of birth, breast or bottle milk feeding and presence of erupted teeth were not statistically (P≤0,05) associated with a greater number of CFU/mL of Lactobacillus spp., Streptococcus mutans and Bifidobacterium spp. in each period of follow-up. Family income, level of education of the child's guardian and presence of oral hygiene suggest association (P≤0,05) with a greater number of CFU/mL of Lactobacillus spp., Streptococcus mutans, and Bifidobacterium spp. in each period of followup. In conclusion, the mean of CFU/mL of Lactobacillus spp., Streptococcus mutans, and Bifidobacterium spp. of babies remained stable during the first 24 months of life. | en |
