Sobre a consistência da teoria da substância de Aristóteles no Livro Z da metafísica

Abstract

Nesse trabalho, examino se a teoria da substancia que Aristóteles apresenta no livro Zeta da Metafísica e uma teoria consistente. James Lesher argumentou que esse nao e o caso. Segundo ele, Aristóteles teria sustentado o seguinte conjunto inconsistente de proposições: (a) a forma e substancia, (b) a forma e universal, e (c) nenhum universal e substancia. Se a teoria de Z e consistente, uma dessas proposições precisam ser rejeitadas. Eu considero, entao, se a concepção de formas particulares de Michael Frede e se a proposta de leitura de Z13 de Myles Burnyeat são capazes de recusar, respectivamente, (b) e (c). Eu argumento que, apesar das duas posições responderem os argumentos de Lesher, elas também enfrentam algumas dificuldades cujas soluções estão longe das pretensões desse trabalho, de modo que não podemos nos decidir categoricamente sobre a consistência da teoria de Aristóteles. Entretanto o exame dessas posições podem esclarecer os caminhos a serem percorridos para que essa decisão seja alcançada.

In this study, I examine wheter Aristotle’s theory of substance in the book Zeta of Metaphysics is logically consistent. James Lesher argued that this is not the case. According to him, Aristotle held the following inconsistent set of propositions: (a) form is substance, (b) form is universal, and (c) no universal is a substance. If Z’s theory is consistent, one of these propositions needs to be rejected. I consider, then, wheter Michael Frede’s conception of particular forms and Myles Burnyeat’s Z13 reading proposal are capable of refusing, respectively, (b) and (c). I argue that although both positions answer Lesher’s arguments, they also face somo difficulties whose solutions are far from the pretensions of the present study, so that we can not categorically decide on the consistency of Aristotle’s theory. However, the examination of these positions can shed some light on the right paths to reach this decision.
