The processes of disinfection of the total dentures are essential for the maintenance of oral health of these users. However, the roughness of the acrylic resins, a material widely used for the preparation of these prostheses, can be affected, depending on the disinfectant solution of choice, thus facilitating the adhesion of microorganisms. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different disinfectant solutions on the average surface roughness (Ra) of an acrylic resin used in the manufacture of a total prosthesis base. This work was an experimental research in vitro, where the sample consisted of 30 test bodies (CP) of acrylic resin type 5 indicated for the prosthesis base. These CPs were randomly distributed into three groups, according to the proposed hygiene protocol. Then, 10 CP were immersed in 1% sodium hypochlorite (GH group); 10 were immersed in apple cider vinegar (GV group) and another 10 were immersed in distilled water (GA group, which was the control group) for 30 minutes once a week for three consecutive months. Before and after each immersion, the roughness of each CP was evaluated and at the end of three months the obtained roughness values were submitted to the repeated measures ANOVA statistical test and the Sidak Posthoc test with significance level of 5%. The results showed that the mean surface roughness (Ra) of the groups were significantly lower in the control group (p <0.05), immersed in distilled water and that there was no statistically significant difference in Ra between CP disinfected with apple cider vinegar and sodium hypochlorite 1% (p> 0.05). This research concluded that immersion in the disinfectant solutions of 1% sodium hypochlorite and apple cider vinegar influenced the Ra of the acrylic resin used in the research, that is, increased the roughness. However, the interpretation of this result must be done with caution, since the mean roughness values obtained with these solutions may be clinically irrelevant, which reinforces the need for clinical research for a longer period to verify the effectiveness of these solutions in disinfection of these acrylic resins.en
