Bem-estar animal em galinhas poedeiras

Abstract

Bem-estar animal é o estado em que o animal se apresenta no ambiente em que vive. Assegurar às aves um ambiente com conforto, com segurança e com alimento, além de evitar dor, medo, angústia e estresse é essencial para manter a saúde e o bem-estar das aves poedeiras. É de extrema importância monitorar o ambiente em que as aves vivem, atentando para fatores como estresse calórico, ambiência, biosseguridade, entre outros. Entender o funcionamento dos sistemas produtivos da avicultura de postura e do sistema agroindustrial de ovos, nos leva ao conhecimento sobre o grau de bem-estar em que os animais estão inseridos. Algumas práticas zootécnicas de manejo utilizadas em poedeiras vêm sendo questionadas e são alvos de muitas críticas, tais como a debicagem e a muda forçada, além da criação em sistema em gaiolas (convencional), que é o mais utilizado, visto que aumenta a produção. Entretanto, há uma alta densidade de alojamento, afetando negativamente os aspectos de bem-estar animal uma vez que as aves são impedidas de realizar a maioria dos seus comportamentos naturais. Sistemas alternativos como os de aves livres de gaiolas (Cage free), onde as galinhas vivem sob piso e conseguem expressar com maior abrangência seu comportamento natural e os sistemas ao ar livre (Free range), os quais as aves são criadas soltas, com acesso a pasto e que quase totalidade de seus instintos são preservados, são formas de criação que promovem maior bem-estar aos animais. Neste trabalho apresenta-se conceitos, recomendações e legislações sobre bem-estar animal, as principais práticas zootécnicas e manejos nos diferentes sistemas de produção de ovos.

Animal welfare is the state in which an animal presents itself in to the environment in which it lives. Ensuring birds with a comfortable, safe and nourishing environment, as well as avoiding pain, fear, distress and stress is essential to maintain the health and well-being of laying birds. It is extremely important to monitor the environment in which birds live, taking into account factors such as caloric stress, ambience, biosafety, among others. Understanding the functioning of the productive systems of poultry laying and the agroindustrial system of eggs, leads us to the knowledge about the degree of well-being in which the animals are inserted. Some animal husbandry zootechnical practices used in laying hens have been questioned and are subject to many criticisms, such as debeaking and forced molting, as well as the creation in cages (conventional), which is the most used, since it increases the production. However, there is a high density of housing, negatively affecting aspects of animal welfare since the birds are prevet from performing most of their natural behaviors. Alternative systems such as Cage free, where chickens can live under floor and are able to express more broadly their natural behavior and Free range systems, in which the birds are created with access the grass and almost all of their instincts are preserved, are forms of creation that promote greater well-being to the animals. This paper presents concepts, recommendations and legislation on animal welfare, the main zootechnical practices and management in the different systems of egg production.
