Obras raras nas instituições de ensino superior: conceito, conservação e preservação da memória institucional

Abstract

As bibliotecas universitárias são o coração das Instituições de Ensino Superior e guardam grande parte de seu patrimônio intelectual. Este material, em sua maioia obras bibliográficas, possui grande valor para a preservação da memória institucional. Pode-se considerar alguns deles como obras únicas e valiosas, podendo se referir a elas como obras raras, que necessitam ser preservadas e conservadas em acervo distinto com cuidados para sua salvaguarda. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo identificar os conceitos de obras raras no contexto das bibliotecas universitárias, averiguar quais bibliotecas das IES de Porto Alegre possuem obras raras e como está o cenário de preservação e conservação destas obras nestes locais. Foi realizado o estudo utilizando método misto, partindo do método descritivo, utilizando como ténica o levantamento de conteúdo, por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com os bibliotecários das IES. Foi realizada também a aplicação de checklist nos locais onde foi averiguado a existência de obras e acervos deste tipo, para expor como está a situação da preservação das obras bibliográficas neste cenário, em comparativo com as diretrizes da IFLA. Os resultados mostraram que 6,2% das bibliotecas universitárias de Porto Alegre possuem obras raras. Destas, apenas 2 tem setor específico para elas. Os dados ilustram que este setor não atenta para a preservação de obras raras. O estudo alerta para a necessidade destas instituições de ensino investirem em políticas específicas para garantir a preservação de sua memória institucional. A partir do estudo, conclui-se que as bibliotecas das IES não têm como pretensão preservar obras raras. Com este trabalho, espera-se contribuir para estudos futuros acerca dos motivos por trás das bibliotecas universitárias não atentarem para a preservação de obras raras, bem como ressaltar a importância da preservação para garantir a manutenção do patrimônio material das instituições e, sendo assim, a integridade da memória institucional.

The University libraries are the heart of Higher Education Institutions and keep much of their intellectual property. This material, in its majority bibliographical works, has great value for the preservation of institutional memory. Some may be considered as unique and valuable books, and may be referred as a rare books, which needs to be preserved and kept in a separate collection with care for their safeguarding. This research aims to identify the concepts of rare books in the context of university libraries, to find out which libraries of the HEIs of Porto Alegre have rare books and how is the scenario of preservation and conservation of these books in these places. The study was carried out using a mixed method, starting from the descriptive method, using as a technique the content survey, through a semistructured interview with the HEIs librarians. It was also carried out the application of checklist in the places where it was verified the existence of books and collections of this type, to expose how is the situation of the preservation of bibliographical books in this scenario, in comparison with the IFLA guidelines. The results showed that only 6.2% of the university libraries of Porto Alegre have rare books and, of these, 2 have specific sectors for them. These data show that this sector does not pay the correct attention to the preservation of rare books. The study warns of the need for these institutions to invest in specific policies to ensure the preservation of their institutional memory. From the study, it is concluded that the libraries of HEIs do not bother to preserve rare books. With this work, it is hoped to contribute to future studies about the reasons are behind of this neglect on the part of the university libraries by the lack of preservation of these their few rare books, as well as to emphasize the importance of preservation in order to guarantee the maintenance of the material patrimony of the institutions and therefore of the integrity of institutional memory.
