Civilization and barbarism : a concept of the border in Calunga of Jorge de Lima and "The south" of Jorge Luis Borges
Abstract
This paper analyzes the work of Jorge de Lima, Calunga, and the short story by Jorge Luis Borges, “The South”, through the concept of border. Today, the border is not set to conquer new territories, but as an element that solidifies a nationality, or even linked to the founding myth of a given society with specific cultural representations. Thus, it can be explained as a border integration of new areas, such as limit of other borders, such as displacement.
