Relações Estados Unidos e Cuba : da construção do imperialismos americano à Primeira Guerra Mundial

Abstract

Objetiva-se, através deste estudo, analisar a construção da política externa dos Estados Unidos para a América Latina e Caribe tendo como foco central as suas consequências e os seus desdobramentos pra Cuba, tendo em consideração ser esta ilha a representação máxima do expansionismo e do imperialismo americano. Para executar esta tarefa, foi realizado o estudo de documentos e fontes primárias; a revisão histórica sobre os conceitos centrais de política externa americana; e a revisão bibliográfica sobre o imperialismo e intervencionismo americanos na América Latina e Caribe tendo como foco as consequências da Guerra Hispano-Americana e, assim, discutir sobre as intenções americanas para Cuba. Procura-se demonstrar a intenção americana de dominar e expandir sua influência em nível mundial, sendo assim, , busca-se ressaltar a importância da Guerra entre Espanha e Estados Unidos (no final do Século XIX e início do XX) para este feito e, comparativamente, analisar as diferenças essenciais no plano imperialista americana para Cuba e para as demais regiões adquiridas no Tratado de Paz de Paris (1989) – Guam, Filipinas e Porto Rico. Esta comparação serve para responder a pergunta principal sobre o porquê de os Estados Unidos não haverem anexado Cuba, em contrapartida, as anexações dos demais territórios.

The present study aims to analyze the construction of the United States' foreign policy in Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing it efforts on its consequences for Cuba, considering that this island is the maximum representation of the American expansionism and Imperialism. To perform this task, the study of primary documents and sources was carried out; as long as the historical review of the central concepts of American foreign policy; and also, the bibliographic review of US imperialism and interventionism in Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on the consequences of the Spanish-American War and thus discussing US intentions for Cuba. This paper seeks to demonstrate the American intention to dominate and expand its influence on a world level, thus, it is sought to emphasize the importance of the War between Spain and the United States (in the end of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century) for this achievement and, comparatively, to analyze the essential differences in the American imperialist plan for Cuba and for the other regions acquired in the Treaty of Peace of Paris (1989) - Guam, Philippines and Puerto Rico. This comparison serves to answer the main question about why the United States did not annex Cuba, in contrast of the annexations of the other territories.
