Representações do intangível : uma análise das fotografias post-mortem, na cidade de Ijuí, no início do século XX.

Abstract

Em tempos hodiernos, a morte é escamoteada, demonizada, afastada ao máximo do olhar cotidiano, ainda considerada um tabu. São inúmeras suas representações e simbolismos durante os séculos e, a partir do advento da fotografia, as imagens post-mortem ou memento mori farão parte das práticas culturais funerárias. Neste trabalho, apresentamos a fotografia post-mortem como elemento aglutinador de simbolismos e representações do trespasse, através da óptica da História Cultural. Pretendemos, como objetivo, compreender esta prática de fotografia como meio de representação da morte e de preservação de memória; refletir sobre os significados culturais atribuídos à morte durante o final do século XIX e início do XX, bem como sobre as concepções culturais atuais em relação ao trespasse. O acervo fotográfico em análise fazem parte do Acervo Fotográfico do Museu Antropológico Diretor Pestana, da cidade de Ijuí, região noroeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul.

In modern times, death is concealed, demonized, removed to the utmost of daily gaze, still considered a taboo. There are innumerable representations and symbolisms during the centuries and, from the advent of photography, the post-mortem or memento mori images will be part of funerary cultural practices. In this work, we present post-mortem photography as an agglutinating element of symbolism and representations of death, through the perspective of Cultural History. We aim, as an objective, to understand this practice of photography as a means of representing death and preserving memory; reflect on the cultural meanings attributed to death during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as on the current cultural conceptions regarding death. The photographic collection under analysis is part of the Photographic Collection of the Anthropological Museum Director Pestana, in the city of Ijuí, northwest region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
