"Estranho, minha mensagem é curta" : mulheres romanas vistas através de seus epitáfios

Abstract

O presente texto tratará sobre como as mulheres do Império Romano, do período arcaico (até aproximadamente 1º século EC), eram vistas e idealizadas pela sociedade e, principalmente, por seus maridos. O objetivo do trabalho é identificar quais eram as qualidades apreciadas e esperadas em uma mulher romana da época, refletindo sobre as relações e os papéis de gênero na antiga sociedade romana. Para tal análise, serão utilizadas como instrumento as inscrições epigráficas contidas em seus epitáfios. Indo de encontro a uma vertente hermenêutica feminista, este trabalho procura recuperar as vozes de algumas das incontáveis mulheres perdidas nos livros de História.

The current text will deal with how women in the Roman Empire, particularly in the archaic period (until about 1º century C.E.), were seen and idealized by society and, most important, by their husbands. The aim of this work is to identify which qualities were the most appreciated and the most hoped for in a roman woman of the time, reflecting on the relationships and gender roles in Ancient Rome society. For this purpose, epigraphic inscriptions used in their epitaphs will be used as analysis instruments. Towards a feminist hermeneutics direction, the current work seeks to recover the voices of some of the countless women lost in History books.
