Este trabalho de conclusão de curso pretende apresentar a análise do processo de Musealização de um objeto que pertence a Seção de Acervo Tridimensional do Museu de História da Medicina do Rio Grande do Sul (MUHM), desde a sua doação ao Hospital Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre até a sua transformação em museália – objeto documento – abordando a pesquisa histórica e museológica, calcada nas características intrínsecas e extrínsecas do objeto que o transformam em fonte de pesquisa. O objeto museológico em questão, denomina-se Pulmão de Aço ou Ventilador de Pressão Negativa e trata-se de um mecanismo médico, inventado nos Estados Unidos no ano de 1928, que se transformou rapidamente em umas das primeiras máquinas do suporte à vida, se tornando famoso por manter vivos os pacientes de poliomielite e contribuindo para o surgimento das primeiras Unidades de Terapia Intensiva. Por todos esses apontamentos, o Pulmão de Aço torna-se um objeto importante para o estudo das questões ligadas à história da saúde e da doença, bem como a questões sociais ligadas a essa temática. ...

This paper aims to introduce the Musealization process analysis of an object that belongs to the three-dimensional Collection of the Medical History Museum of Rio Grande do Sul (MUHM), from its donation to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital of Porto Alegre, until its transformation in musealia - document object - approaching the historical and museological research, based on the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of the object that make it a source of research. This paper aims to introduce the Musealization process analysis of an object that belongs to the three-dimensional Collection of the Medical History Museum of Rio Grande do Sul (MUHM), from its donation to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital of Porto Alegre, until its transformation in musealia - document object - approaching the historical and museological research, based on the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of the object that make it a source of research. The museological object in question is called Iron Lung or Negative Pressure Ventilator, invented in the United States in 1928, quickly became one of the first life support machines, becoming famous for keeping alive polio patients, and contributing to the emergence of the first intensive care units. For all those reasons, Iron Lung becomes an important object for the study of issues related to the history of health and disease, as well as social issues related to this theme. ...
