| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | Each one of the existent theories of the firm is built upon its own fundamental assumptions from which specific strategic views are derived for the organizations. In the case of these drivers not being compatible with the very nature of sustainable development, the creation of policies for a sustainable world can be jeopardized since their beginning. Taking this issue as a starting point, in this theoretical paper we analyze the fitness between each one of the five theories of the firm consolidated in the strategic and economic literature and the underlying assumptions of the sustainable development. Thus, we begin this work by exposing the sustainable development’s five key characteristics which altogether, demand seven specific competences from the organizations. After, the five theories of the firm are analyzed face to these same characteristics and competences. Our theoretical analyses indicate that, in ascending order, the most sustainable developmentcompatible theories of the firm are: Bain’s firm, neoclassic firm, TCE, Schumpeter’s firm and, finally, RBV – which is viewed along with the knowledge theory of the firm and the cognitive theory of the firm. We believe that by showing the compatibilities and incompatibilities of these theories with the sustainable development, we shed light over the potential capability of these firms in embrace, at the same time, economic, social and environmental objectives. These conclusions may help in the theoretical advancement of a “sustainable theory of the firm”. | en |
