This paper studies the five cities and 14 vilas —towns that have obtained municipal status—, established in the luso–american territories during the Iberian Union (1580-1640), when Portugal and its ultramarine domains were annexed to the Spanish Crown. The objective is to study the configurational shape of the vilas, in order to identify common elements because the highest degree of permanence of the foundational structures verified in this settlements. The method employed is the interpretation of the urban form by means of systematic drawing of the plants of the initial areas and the relationship with historical references and technical data. In all cases, there are the same principles in the situation, strategy of regional planning and deployment strategy. In eight examples there are similarities in the urban setting by means of orthogonal grids originated from a square in which stand the Church and collective buildings. The work suggests the existence of a specific urban practice and a reference to the spanish–american urban regulations contained in the Ordenanzas de Población (1573) due to the political and technical integration that characterized the period.en
