dc.description.abstractO presente estudo tem por objetivo compreender o contexto em que nos Estados Unidos do século XIX, anteriormente a Guerra de Secessão, tiveram início as reivindicações em prol da igualdade de gênero e seus principais desdobres a partir da figura ímpar de Sarah Moore Grimké e de uma breve análise de sua obra. Sarah escreveu um conjunto de quinze cartas que recebeu o nome de Letters on the equality of sexes and condition of woman, sendo publicado em 1838. Essas cartas são responsáveis pela difusão de ideias que defendem a igualdade das mulheres enquanto cidadãs perante os homens em uma sociedade guiada por preceitos do patriarcado. Elas também apresentam as condições a que tais mulheres são historicamente sujeitas em diversas partes do mundo. O trabalho está divido em duas partes maiores, onde na primeira é realizada uma contextualização do período e local onde se desenrolaram esses fatos, partindo-se do momento vivido pelos Estados Unidos (macro) até chegar à família Grimké, e consequentemente na figura de Sarah Grimké (micro). Já o segundo momento, é dedicado a apresentar o conteúdo das cartas da autora, problematizando alguns conceitos caros para o entendimento das ideias da autora, bem como para a área de estudos de gênero. Além de, em um momento final, realizar uma curta reflexão a respeito das influências, da permanência e atualidade dos pensamentos de Sarah.pt_BR
dc.description.abstractThe following paper aims to understand through the unique character of Sarah Moore Grimké and a brief analysis of her work, the context in which the claims for gender equality and its first developments first took place in the United States of the 19th Century, before the Civil War. Sarah wrote a total of fifteen letters which were given the name of Letter on the equality of sexes and condition of woman, and published in 1838. These letters are responsible for the dissemination of ideas which defend women equality as citizens to men in a society guided by patriarchal principles. They also describe the conditions to which women have been historically subjected in different parts of the world. The paper is divided in two larger parts. The first, in which there is a contextualization of the period and the location where these facts happen, beginning at the moment in the history of the United States (macro) leading to the Grimké family and consequently to the character Sarah Grimké (micro). Whereas, the second part is dedicated to presenting the content of the author’s letters as well as analyzing some important concepts to the understanding of her ideas and to the field of the gender studies. Furthermore, in the final part, it reflects upon the influences, the permanence and the contemporary aspect of Sarah’s ideas.en
