Different levels of herbage allowance can affect sward structure which, in turn, influence cattle ingestive behavior. Aiming to evaluate this hypothesis along the different seasons of the year, an experiment was established in natural pasture of the Campaign region, at Fepagro Campaign Unit, Hulha Negra, RS. Treatments consisted of herbage allowances (4, 8, 12 and 16% kg of GLDM/100 kg of PV/day),in a completely randomized block design with two replicates. The grazing method was continuous stocking with variable stocking rate, using the “put-and-take” technique, sward structure and animal ingestive behavior being evaluated. The herbage allowances affected the frequency of the upper stratum in spring. In addition, the frequencies of Sisyrinchium platense, Solidago chilensis, Eryngium horridum, Baccharis trimera, Eupatorium buniifolium and Saccharum trinii had differed significantly among the seasons the year in the upper stratum. The frequency in the inferior stratum of the species Sisyrinchium platense, Eragrostis plana, Eryngium horridum and Saccharum trinii and the groups of species of tripping grasses , grasses, juncáceas and legumes had also differed among seasons. At the upper stratum Saccharum trinii presented greater frequency of defoliation in the 4% treatment, and on autumn and spring seasons. Considering the inferior stratum, an interaction between herbage allowance and the seasons of the year was detected in relation to the percentage of defoliated Saccharum trinii..Ciperáceas and juncáceas presented greater amount of defoliated plants in summer. In relation to the ingestive behavior, grazing and ruminating times presented interaction between the herbage allowance treatments and the seasons of the year, decreasing grazing time and increasing ruminating time in autumn and spring with increasing herbage allowance. The increase in participation of the upper stratum affected grazing time negatively and ruminating time positively. The increase in the average height of the inferior stratum provided lower grazing time and greater ruminating time in autumn, winter and spring The herbage allowance modifies the composition of the upper stratum and its frequency of occurrence. Ciperáceas and juncáceas, independent of the allowance level, are highly consumed. The height of the inferior stratum is affected by herbage allowance and season of the year. The ingestive behavior was related with to either herbage allowance and sward structure. The grazing time presents a decreasing response to the increase of the sward height of the inferior stratum, as a consequence of the increase in herbage allowance.en
