Os impactos econômicos de megaeventos esportivos : um estudo sobre a Copa do Mundo de futebol de 2010 na África do Sul

Abstract

A presente pesquisa se propõe a avaliar os principais impactos econômicos dos megaeventos esportivos para as sedes sob uma ótica mais realista, isto é, por meio de uma análise ex post. A ideia é desvincular o estudo da euforia comumente atrelada a esses torneios e das estimativas ex ante extremamente otimistas e exageradas. Com essa finalidade, posteriormente à apresentação de alguns pontos importantes a respeito dos megaeventos esportivos em geral, um estudo de caso sobre a Copa do Mundo de Futebol de 2010, sediada pela África do Sul, será construído. O intuito é explorar o tema com maior objetividade, apresentando ao leitor um caso prático que facilite o entendimento do assunto. Aspectos referentes à formação histórica, social, política e econômica dos sul-africanos serão abordados, de modo que tenhamos condições de fazer uma análise crítica do Mundial de Futebol respaldada em uma base teórica consistente. Finalmente, o campeonato em questão será diretamente explorado, onde as principais expectativas referentes ao torneio, os investimentos necessários e os impactos econômicos para a sociedade sul-africana frente à realidade na qual ela está inserida nos guiarão ao fechamento do trabalho. A conclusão a que chegamos não é muito diferente da já identificada por outros autores que realizaram análises ex post de megaeventos esportivos sediados por diversos países: as expectativas de impactos positivos para a África do Sul também foram exageradas e superestimadas, e a Copa do Mundo de Futebol de 2010 parece não ter representado um grande impulso para o crescimento e para o desenvolvimento econômico dos sul-africanos.

This research aim to assess the main economic impacts of mega sporting events to the host countries in a more realistic view, in other words, through an ex post analysis. The idea is to unlink the study of the euphoria commonly linked to these tournaments and of the ex ante estimates overly optimistic and exaggerated. For this purpose, after presentations of some important points about the mega sport events in general, a case study about the Football World Cup 2010, hosted by South Africa, will be built. The aim is to explore the subject more objectively, presenting the reader with a practical case that facilitates the understanding of the subject. Aspects relating to the historical, social, political and economic formation of the South Africans will be approached so that we may be able to make critical analysis of the World Cup supported in a consistent theoretical basis. Finally, the championship in question will be directly exploited, where the main expectations regarding the tournament, the necessary investments and the economic impacts on the South Africans society faced to the reality in which it is embedded will lead us to the conclusion of this study. The conclusion we reached is not very different from the already identified by other authors which performed ex post mega sporting events analysis about various countries: the expectations of positive impacts for South Africa were also exaggerated and overstated, and the Football World Cup 2010 does not seem to have represented a major boost to growth and economic development of South Africans.
