Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is an enveloped single stranded RNA retrovirus that infects domestic cats. Infection with FeLV occurs worldwide, being considered an important and common cause of disease. Vertical and horizontal transmission are possible, especially through saliva. Infection result can be of four types: abortive, progressive, regressive and focal or atypic. The virus causes several clinical syndromes, including lymphomas and leukemias, anemia, and immunosuppression. Diagnosis involves detection of p27 antigen (ELISA and IFA) and viral RNA or proviral DNA (PCR). There is no effective treatment, but antiviral and immunomodulator drugs have been used. Control of the infection involves test and isolation and vaccination, as well as hygiene measures. There are no public health concerns about the virus. The objective of this paper is to characterize several features of FeLV infection in cats. Besides, we aim to report a case of an one year and eight months old female mixed breed cat, infected by FeLV which showed sudden signs of illness, and died a few days after the onset of clinical presentation. Review of literature includes features as history, etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, prevention and control, and public health concerns. The case report presents data obtained during history taking, clinical examination, laboratory tests and necropsy examination, as well as macro- and microscopic changes. The animal showed FeLV-associated changes in multiple organs and secondary infections, including sinusitis, pneumonia, hepatitis, nephritis, and pancreatitis. With this report, we aim to provide a complete and concise review of an important disease in feline medicine, illustrating one of the possible presentations of the disease in clinical practice. ...
