O desequilíbrio tanto dorso-palmar/plantar quanto médio-lateral dessa condição gera a imposição desproporcional das forças atuantes no dígito eqüino, predispondo a severas condições patológicas.
The equine hoof has several essential roles in maintaining the expected balance of the musculoskeletal system. Functions such as impact absorption with soil, wear resistance, aid in propulsion, support to the animal's weight and aid in blood return from the end to the top of the limb make this structure a key to the good health of the horse. The foot balance refers to the relationship between the hoof, its related structures, soil and equine locomotory system. It involves at least three different types of balance: geometric, dynamic, and the latest concept of natural balance, obtained by observing the wild horses. The dorso-palmar/plantar as the medio-lateral imbalance generates a disproportional imposition of forces acting on the equine digit, predisposing to severe pathological conditions. Balancing foot is obtained objectively through eleven measurements (toe length, quarters and talons, length and width of the sole and frog, hoof angulation, and coronary circumference) and by calculating the rate of frog and the relation between the weight bearing area of the digit and the weight of the horse. In addition, other assessments might be used as contour of the coronary band, symmetry of the hoof, the hoof side analysis and radiographic verification. These measures serve as parameters for the correct hoof trimming and shoeing, being an important tool for the treatment and prevention of diseases of the locomotory system in horses.en
