Este trabalho apresenta uma análise de alguns jogos de linguagem presentes no primeiro capítulo do livro Everything is illuminated (2003), de Jonathan Safran Foer, e sua respectiva tradução para o português, Tudo se ilumina, feita pelos tradutores Paulo Reis e Sergio Moraes Rego e publicada pela editora Rocco, em 2005. O capítulo escolhido se intitula Abertura para o encerramento de uma jornada muito rígida (An overture to the commencement of a very rigid journey, no original). Para realizar este estudo, foram utilizados os conceitos de Arrojo sobre compreensão e interpretação e os conceitos de Aubert sobre mensagens e fidelidade, além do suporte de três dicionários: Merriam-Webster e Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, de língua inglesa, e Aurélio, de língua portuguesa. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar casos onde ocorreram perdas e ganhos na tradução dos jogos de linguagem. Sendo a obra escolhida complexa e que exige muita pesquisa e trabalho com vistas à tradução, este pode ser considerado um bom objeto de estudo e análise. ...

This paper presents an analysis of wordplays found in the first chapter of Everything is illuminated (2003) by Jonathan Safran Foer, while it also approaches the translated version in Portuguese, Tudo se ilumina, by Paulo Reis and Sergio Moraes Rego, published by Rocco, 2005. The chapter selected is entitled An overture to the commencement of a very rigid journey (Abertura para o encerramento de uma jornada muito rígida in Portuguese). In order to approach this study, Arrojo's notions of comprehension and interpretation, and Auberf's concepts of messages and fidelity were applied. As for the support on vocabulary and definition, three dictionaries were used: Merriam-Webster and Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary for English definitions, and Aurélio for Portuguese definitions. The purpose of this work is to analyze cases in which wordplays were successfully translated to Portuguese and others in which they were not. As the chosen literary work is complex and requires a great amount of research and workto be translated, it can be considered a good subject for study and analysis. ...
