Relationship between humans and dolphins are recorded for many years. One of the rarest examples is that of cooperative fishing, where fishermen and dolphins work together in the search for food (fish). This phenomenon was recorded a few times in the world, and currently there are few places where this relationship occurs. The Barra do Rio Tramandaí, in the Tramandaí river (29 ° 58'S 050 ° 07'O), the southern coast of Brazil, is one of the only places where this phenomenon occurs. There, for approximately 20 years, artisanal fishermen and dolphins of Tursiops genera cooperate in the fishing for mullet (Mugil spp.). This relationship is important for fishermen, since fishing effort becomes more effective in the presence of dolphins. The cooperative fishing is also important for the dolphins because at the time the fisherman's net is thrown into the water, the school of mullet breaks its formation, facilitating the capture of prey by dolphins. The area where the cooperative fishing takes place is frequented by users from different socioeconomic profiles, attending the environment of the River Tramandaí bar with distinct purposes. Recently, some of the activities undertaken in the bar for its users may be resulting in impacts to the population of resident dolphins. The practice of recreational fishing, transit of vessels, the disorderly occupation of the area and the environmental degradation of the region could jeopardize the continuity of this dolphin population and also the phenomenon of cooperative fishing. The aim of this study was to investigate, to understand and compare the different knowledge an perceptions of distinct users of Barra do Rio Tramandaí of the biodiversity of the region, about the population of resident dolphins in this place and also on the cooperative fishing with fishermen. 190 interviews were conducted between six socioeconomic groups: Public Officials (n = 30), Merchants (n = 31), Sportsmen (n = 30), Residents (n = 34) Fishermen (n = 32) and Tourists (n = 33). Univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the Knowledge of Local Environment (KLE) () and the Knowledge about the Botos da Barra (KBB) in each group. Perceptions of groups on the impacts of activities were measured by Likert Scale. The perception of the cooperative fishery was assessed with the aid of the Chi-square test, analyzing the frequencies of responses in each group. The fishermen group showed greater KLE in comparison with the other groups. Traders and Tourists have the lowest KLA. The Fishermen’s group KBB is significantly higher (F = 10.076 p <0.0001) than the KBB of the other social groups. Fishermen believe that their relationship with dolphins is a cooperative partnership. Sportsmen and Public Agents believe that the fisherman takes advantage of the natural behavior of the dolphins. Tourists could not explain the phenomenon. The results showed differences in perception and understanding among the social groups studied. Fishermen and Tourists more often showed distinct opinions. Traditional knowledge and current scientific knowledge disclosed the lack of knowledge of certain social actors ( e.g. tourists) in respect of the the resident dolphin population, the cooperative fishery and the of the ecosystem of the region. It is concluded that dialogue and cooeperation between scientific and traditional knowledge, as well as environmental education initiatives are extremely important measures to preserve the population of dolphins Tursiops sp. and the phenomenon of cooperative fishing on the River Tramandaí.en
