Among the biological systems for wastewater treatment, the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactors has had stand out application in the last years, mainly for being a compact system of simple operation and manage significant efficiency levels of organic matter removal. ln the literature there are several researches related to this treatment system aiming the improvement of biological and chemistries characteristics increasing its efficiency. However, there are few researches emphasizing physicals characteristics of these structures. The objective is to proceed a physical study of a structure for the wastewater treatment that uses the system UASB, characterizing its hydrodynamic behavior in order to propose design guidelines that contribute to the improvement of the system. The study is proceeded in a three-dimensional physical model in reduced scale, based on a prototype in operation, fact that allow the identification of the similitude parameters necessary to the modelling of the hydrodynamic behavior of the process that occurs in these reactors. Specifically the work presents the evaluation of the hydrodynamic behavior of the jets distribution system located at the bottom of the reactor. The hydrodynamic phenomena present in this area is characterized by the injection of a fluid through a hole in an environment composed by other fluid with greater density, due to the presence of biosolid matter dissolved, resulting in a flow of the type buoyant jets effects. An accomplished theoretical study is introduced which evaluated the main hydraulic characteristic parameters of the present phenomena. With this theoretical study and with the physical model of the reactor, flow visualization techniques were applied to evaluate the behavior of these jets under several flow rates and density gradients conditions. With this theoretical study and with the physical model of the reactor, flow visualization techniques were applied to evaluate the behavior of these jets under several flow rates and density gradients conditions. With the presented theoretical base and with the evaluations proceeded in the model, the work concludes with the proposition of design parameters for the area under influence of the entrance jets at the bottom of the reactor.en
