Grinding burn influence on service life of homokinetic joints

The homokinetic halfshaft is responsible for the transmission of torque and rotation from the gearbox to the wheels and its failure can lead to accidents and, for that reason, its manufacturing must ensure that any defects originated from the machining processes involved in its fabrication be minimized. It is important that the influences and consequences that those defects cause on the utilization of the joint are known. The grinding process utilized in the manufacturing of the joints can cause a defect known as grinding burn. Usually happens when the cooling applied in the process is not effective and the heat transferred to the part is elevated. The consequence of that defect is the reduction of surface and subsurface hardness. Considering that the expected failure in a homokinetic joint is the formation of pitins by superficial fatigue, the reduction in surface hardness in the contact region of its internal components has a negative effect on the endurance life of the joint. A premature failure can cause noise, vibration and in extreme cases lead to the catastrophic failure of the halfshaft. The Macielisnki theory to calculate the endurance life of the homokinetic joint was analyzed and an endurance test was conducted to confirm the reduced performance of the defected joint. ...
