Representações da Revolução Industrial e da classe trabalhadora em North and South, de Elizabeth Gaskell

Abstract

A questão que norteia o presente trabalho é a seguinte: de que maneira Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865), uma escritora inglesa pertencente à classe média, percebia as mudanças provocadas pela Primeira Revolução Industrial? Na tentativa de responder esta pergunta, analisamos representações sobre a Primeira Revolução Industrial e suas consequências na obra North and South (1855), enfatizando a forma com que o contraste entre os ambientes agrário e industrial, as condições de vida e de trabalho dos operários, bem como as relações construídas entre eles e seus patrões, aparecem em suas páginas. Esta análise é fundamentada nos conceitos de representação, classe e Revolução Industrial, bem como na percepção da literatura ficcional como fonte excepcional para a História, por conter os pontos de vista e ideias de indivíduos contemporâneos a um período histórico específico. O presente trabalho possui como hipótese a ideia de que a trajetória de Elizabeth Gaskell como um todo influenciou na forma com que patrões e trabalhadores são percebidos em North and South. Assim, concluímos que as consequências da Primeira Revolução Industrial foram demonstradas de maneira negativa por Gaskell, embora a autora busque se manter neutra ante os conflitos por ela apresentados no romance.

The question guiding this paper is: how Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865), an English writer belonging to a lower middle class, perceived the changes brought by the First Industrial Revolution? Attempting to answer this question, we analyzed the representations of the First Industrial Revolution and its consequences in North and South (1855), emphasizing the way in which the contrast between agrarian and industrial, the conditions of life and labor of the workers, as well as the relationships that were built between them and their employers, appears on its pages. This analysis is based on the concepts of representation, class and Industrial Revolution, as well as the perception of fictional literature as an exceptional source for History, as it contains views and ideas of individuals contemporary to a specific historical period. We work with the hypothesis that the trajectory of Elizabeth Gaskell as a whole has influenced the way in which employers and workers were seen in North and South. Thus, we conclude that Gaskell demonstrated the consequences of the First Industrial Revolution in a negative way, although the author sought to remain neutral about the conflicts presented in the novel.
