Análise comparativa do desgaste de escovas dentais em ensaio clínico de curta duração

Abstract

Objetivos: Este estudo comparou as mudanças na forma de escovas macias e médias após utilização por um período de 28 dias. Métodos: O estudo incluiu 34 adolescentes (idade 14-18 anos, 15 mulheres). Os participantes usaram cada escova em um período de 28 dias, com intervalo de 10 dias entre os períodos. Não houve tentativa de mudar os hábitos de escovação. Foram utilizadas escovas de forma plana, multi-tufos, macias ou médias (Kolynos-Classica, Brasil). As medições de comprimento, largura e altura das cerdas foram realizadas no início e no final de cada período, com um paquímetro digital (Mitutoyo). As medidas de altura e de largura foram realizadas na ponta, no meio e no cabo. O comprimento e a largura foram medidos na superfície da cabeça enquanto a altura foi medida a partir da inserção das cerdas no cabo até essa mesma superfície. As médias foram comparadas pelo teste T (p <0,05). Resultados: Não houve diferença entre as escovas novas macias e médias. A utilização de ambos os tipos levou a mudanças significativas nos valores iniciais de comprimento, largura e altura. Na medição final, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas na altura e na largura entre as escovas, exceto para uma altura reduzida no terço próximo ao cabo da escova macia. Após 28 dias, as escovas macias possuíam um comprimento significativamente maior do que as escovas médias. O comprimento inicial da cabeça das escovas macias e médias foi de 25,12 milímetros e 25,18 milímetros, respectivamente. Depois de 28 dias, o comprimento da cabeça da escova macia foi de 28,41 mm (dp = 2,27) e o da escova média foi de 27,30 milímetros (dp = 2,56). Conclusão: As escovas macias e médias mostraram mudanças significativas em sua forma após 28 dias de uso. Alterações no comprimento da cabeça foram significativamente maiores nas escovas macias em relação às médias, possivelmente associados a uma significativa diminuição da altura próxima ao cabo da escova.

Objectives: This study compared changes in shape of soft and medium toothbrushes used in 28-day periods. Methods: The study included 34 adolescents (age 14-18 years, 15 females). Participants used each brush in one of two 28-day periods with a 10-day wash out interval. No attempt was made to change the toothbrushing habits. The toothbrushes were flat trimmed, multi-tufted, soft or medium stiffness (Kolynos-Classica, Brazil). Measurements of length, width and height were performed prior to and at the end of each period with a digital pachymeter (Mitutoyo). Measurements of height and width were performed at the tip, middle and handle thirds of the head. Width and length were measured at the surface of the head. The height was measured from the insertion of the bristles in the handle to the same surface. Means were compared using the T-test (p<0.05). Results: There were no differences between new soft and medium toothbrushes. The use of both led to significant changes in the initial values of length, width and height. At the final measurement no significant differences between brushes were found in height and width except for a decreased height of the soft brush at the third close to the handle,. After 28 days soft brushes showed a significantly higher length than medium brushes. Initial head length means were 25.12 mm and 25.18 mm for soft and medium respectively. After 28 days the mean length of the soft brush was 28.41 mm (sd=2.27) and 27.30 mm (sd=2.56) for the medium brush. Conclusion: Soft and medium brushes showed significant changes in shape after 28 days of use. Changes in length of the head were significantly larger in soft than medium toothbrushes possibly associated with a significant decrease in height close to the handle of the brush.
