Orthodontic treatment combines esthetic and functional benefits. Patients with periodontal disease history have the biology and biomechanics of the tissues with different characteristics than teeth with normal periodontal apparatus, but if periodontal tissues are healthy, the orthodontic treatment can be an alternative treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a literature review to investigate the interrelationship of Orthodontics and Periodontal Disease, addressing treatment indications and contraindications, the development of biofilm microbiology and preventive measures of periodontal control. A search in databases such as CAPES, MEDLINE, PubMed, SciELO, BIREME, LILACS and COCHRANE was performed. The exclusion criteria involved clinical case reports and studies involving congenital malformation. The results found were: orthodontic treatment in patients with reduced periodontium can be realized by using light forces, the beginning of treatment must show the absence of active periodontal disease and the periodontopathogen most frequently found in the reviewed studies was Tannerella forsythia. Furthermore, aligners compared to fixed appliances may facilitate the individual oral hygiene and can be an appropriate treatment option for patients with increased risk for periodontal disease. Thus, the interrelationship between periodontal and orthodontic treatments demonstrates the best way to prevent and maintain the periodontal tissues and ensures the success of orthodontic treatment.en
