A arquitetura de linhagem brutalista em Porto Alegre nos anos 60/70

Abstract

O texto examina a arquitetura realizada em Porto Alegre nos anos sessenta e setenta, sob a influência do que se convencionou como brutalismo. Paralelamente à preferência pelos materiais industrializados, formas sintéticas e estandardizações próprias do gosto construtivo introduzido na cidade no final dos anos cinquenta, uma linhagem de feições brutalistas se constituiu gradualmente na década seguinte, através da valorização da estrutura e uso do concreto aparente, destacadamente. Em parte, essa alternativa apresentava um comportamento oposto à primeira, pelo alto teor artesanal presente tanto na concepção quanto na execução das obras: o projeto perseguia soluções e detalhes exclusivos, divergentes do ideal de padronização e serialidade da indústria; e a execução das obras ratificava a postura, ao adotar a prática de moldar peças únicas em fôrmas descartáveis. O trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a experiência local através de um breve panorama de suas obras mais representativas, incluindo o caso contestável exemplar do Centro Administrativo do Estado, que demonstra o aplanamento recorrente das grandes obras do período A investigação também procura identificar e dimensionar com mais precisão influências plausíveis, como as obras pós-guerra de Le Corbusier e Mies – cuja sobreposição constituiu as bases do brutalismo –, a Escola Paulista e outros aportes eventuais; e as contribuições autorais que transmitiram singularidade às obras. Uma meta mais ambiciosa busca respaldar a premissa de que o teor artesanal intrínseco ao brutalismo foi um fator decisivo no encaminhamento daquela produção: por um lado ocorreu laudável compartilhamento de um repertório de componentes e soluções exemplares, que sustenta a existência de uma Escola Paulista; por outro, a experimentação autoral nos arranjos espaciais e detalhes produziu resultados questionáveis frequentes, através de equivocados “rasgos artísticos” desprovidos de necessários fundamentos.

This paper examines the architecture held in Porto Alegre in the sixties and seventies under the influence of the conventionally called Brutalism. In parallel to the preference for industrial materials, synthetic forms and typical standardizations of the constructive kind introduced in the city in the late fifties, a line of brutalist features was gradually formed in the sixties by developing the structure and the use of exposed concrete, prominently. In part, that alternative has showed an opposite behavior to the first one through the high artisanal tenor present in both design and execution of works: the project has pursued solutions and unique details, differing from the ideal of industry’s standardization and seriality; and the execution of the buildings ratified that posture when adopted the practice of molding unique pieces in disposable molds. The paper aims to analyze the local experience through a brief overview of its most representative works, including the controversial exemplar case of the State Administrative Centre, which demonstrates the recurrent flattening of the great works of the period. The research also seeks to identify and to measure more precisely its plausible influences, such as the post-war works of Le Corbusier and Mies – whose superposition constituted the bases of brutalism –, the “Paulista School” and any other eventual references; and the personal contributions of the authors that transmitted uniqueness to the works A more ambitious goal seeks to support the premise that the artisanal content intrinsic in the brutalism was a decisive factor for the engagement of that production: on one hand there was a laudable repertoire share of components and exemplary solutions, which supports the existence of a “Paulista School”; on the other hand, the authorship trials in spatial arrangements and in details produced frequent questionable results, through misguided “artistic tears” devoid of necessary fundamentals.
