A implantação é do tipo subtecodonte. No entanto, as discrepâncias entre as amostras ósseas e dentárias não fornecem detalhes suficientes para sustentar a hipótese de três gêneros monoespecíficos para os Mesosauridade.; In the fossil record of vertebrates, teeth and bones are the primary sources of information about the evolution and paleobiology of these animals. In this sense, the study of dental and bone microstructure emerges as a valuable tool for interpreting these informations, providing details such as ontogenetic stage and age estimates. Mesosaurs are an enigmatic group of aquatic parareptiles from the Permian age, well-known in the African and South American continents. The group was previously thought to consist of three monospecific genera (Brazilosaurus sanpauloensis, Stereosternum tumidum, and Mesosaurus tenuidens), but recent studies indicate the existence of only M. tenuidens. In Brazil, they have a broad geographical occurrence, found in rocks of the Irati Formation from the Midwest to the south. They have a triangular skull in dorsal view, a long rostrum with the oral cavity equipped with numerous conical and slender teeth, and a long vertebral column with compact bones, especially ribs and vertebrae. The study of dental microstructure revealed enamel with a surface formed by apicobasal ridges and simple crystallites not organized in prisms, globular dentine and orthodentine occupying most of the dental volume, and plicidentine, described for the first time, found at the base of the teeth. The implantation is of the subthecodont type. Regarding bone microstructure, the high compactness is notable, with the medullary cavity filled with endosteal depositions and a compact periosteal bone. There is little histovariability among the more than 20 samples studied, with periosteal bone composed of parallel-fibered tissue, poorly vascularized, and intercepted by various cyclic growth marks (CGMs) indicating a slow rate of bone deposition influenced by seasonality. The occurrence of an external fundamental system in some samples suggests that determined growth was already a strategy present in the Paleozoic and probably not a derived feature in Amniota. Furthermore, differences in the pattern of MCCs were observed, suggesting slight discrepancies in bone deposition between individuals from the northern and southern portions of the Paraná Basin, possibly caused by environmental heterogeneities, forming distinct populations. However, the discrepancies between bone and dental samples do not provide sufficient details to support the hypothesis of three monospecific genera for Mesosauridae.

Ferreira, Thais Matos Pereira
The Cingulata, members of the most diverse group of xenarthrans in Cenozoic ecosystems, encompass the family Pampatheriidae, documented from the middle Miocene to the early Holocene. During the middle Pleistocene to the early Holocene, this family reached its largest sizes, averaging around 120 kg. The Pampatheriidae clade is situated within the superfamily Chlamyphoroidea and is distinguished from other cingulates by the presence of a dorsal carapace with three movable bands formed by osteoderms. Devoid of living representatives, pampatheriids exhibit a relatively limited diversity, with only 20 described species. Originating in South America, these animals also dispersed to the subcontinents of Central and North America. The first section of this thesis provides a concise review of knowledge about xenarthrans, with a special emphasis on the Pampatheriidae clade, addressing anatomical, taxonomic, phylogenetic, and paleogeographic aspects. This thesis aims to present a concise review of the knowledge on xenarthrans, with a special emphasis on the clade Pampatheriidae, covering anatomical, taxonomic, phylogenetic, and paleogeographic aspects. The state-of-the-art of Pampatheriidae is succinctly presented, including specimens studied during this doctoral research, attributed to Quaternary neotropical pampatheriids. The thesis research investigated the validity of these taxa through the study of the original materials of each species, providing illustration and description of osteoderm specimens fundamental for the taxonomic understanding of Quaternary Pampatheriidae. Following the initial analysis, the anatomical identification and description of a new incomplete and disarticulated skeleton of Pampatheriidae from northeastern Brazil were developed, and the taxon dispersion in the Neotropical Region was analyzed. Additionally, to contribute further data on Neotropical Quaternary species, the description of endocranial molds of pampatheriids from the genera Pampatherium and Holmesina was elaborated, as well as the three-dimensional morphology of their intralveolar cavities and dentition, enabling comparison with available endocasts of Pampatheriidae to draw morphological conclusions about the brains of these cingulates and seek morphological evidence for each studied taxon. This thesis research enabled taxonomic revisions and updates, bringing to light new specimens and revealing old ones, morphologically unknown in the literature, and contributed to taxonomic updates, proposing two synonyms and a generic update.

Farias, Brodsky Dantas Macedo
The 'Rauisuchia' are pseudosuchians of the clade Paracrocodylomorpha, forming a paraphyletic grouping. Some taxa of “rauisuchians”, represented by medium to large-sized predators that lived during the Triassic, are more closely related to Crocodylomorpha, the only group of living pseudosuchians, and nested with them in the clade Loricata. Among these basal Loricata are the Brazilian species Decuriasuchus quartacolonia and Prestosuchus chiniquensis, which are key elements for elucidating paleobiological aspects of the group, due to the completeness of their skeletons. These two species are the main focus of this thesis, which aims to advance the understanding of growth patterns in "Rauisuchia," still poorly studied in this regard, through bone paleohistology. A state-of-theart review was conducted on bone paleohistology, and on the growth patterns of the crocodilian lineage (Pseudosuchia), emphasizing especially the Triassic forms, as well as their ancestors (basal Archosauromorpha), serving as a foundation for the knowledge produced in the thesis. Two articles were prepared and submitted, with the first already published in a indexed journal. This article describes the osteohistology of nine elements belonging to three specimens of Decuriasuchus quartacolonia. Contrary to previous studies indicating that the monotypic aggregation of ten Decuriasuchus individuals was represented by adults, osteohistological data suggest that the aggregation would be composed of juveniles growing quite rapidly, based on the presence of the fibrolamellar complex and only one growth arrest line in the cortex of all sampled specimens. The hypothesis that Decuriasuchus would be the juvenile form of Prestosuchus chiniquensis was raised because its diagnosis was based on only three skull autapomorphies, a region of the skeleton that undergoes significant modifications during ontogeny. Additionally, several similar characteristics between the skulls of both taxa were identified in previous osteological studies, along with their simultaneous occurrence in the same outcrop. Additionally, the osteohistological data support the previous hypothesis that Decuriasuchus quartacolonia would be the oldest archosaur to exhibit gregarious behavior but pointing to an aggregation composed exclusively of juvenile individuals, based on the same number of growth lines (only one) in all sampled specimens. The second article proposes an ontogenetic growth model for Prestosuchus chiniquensis based on age classes, from the osteohistology of four specimens, with the potential to become a reference for ontogenetic studies of "Rauisuchia." Additionally, taxonomic issues arising from knowledge of the ontogenetic stages of the sampled specimens are also discussed. Osteohistological analyses strengthen the previous hypothesis that specimen UFRGS-PV-0152-T, originally attributed to Prestosuchus chiniquensis, would be a new taxon. The suspicion is based on the maturity of the skeleton, indicated by osteohistological data, and the fact that the specimen is significantly smaller than other skeletally mature specimens of Prestosuchus chiniquensis. The new taxon awaits a formal anatomical description. The results presented here consolidate the understanding that, the growth patterns of pseudosuchians, once considered slow-growing animals, are more varied and complex than imagined. The ontogenetic model proposed for P. chiniquensis highlights that the animal could grow rapidly based on the presence of the fibrolamellar and parallel-fibered complexes in at least four delineated age classes (I-IV), transitioning to slower growth in the last two (V-VI), as evidenced by the presence of the lamellar complex. The proposed ontogenetic model will encourage comparison with other taxa phylogenetically close to Decuriasuchus and Prestosuchus. Finally, this work demonstrates the importance of paleohistology not only for accessing paleobiological aspects of extinct vertebrates but also as a crucial complementary tool for accurately describing new taxa.

This dissertation investigates the chemical composition of a shallow snow core (4.95 m) collected during a Brazilian traverse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in the 2014/2015 Austral summer. The snow core, TT-6, underwent standard decontamination procedures and was sub-sampled at the Climate Change Institute in Orono, Maine, USA. Stable isotope ratios (δD and δ18O) and ionic content were determined at the Centro Polar e Climático of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (CPC/UFRGS) and the Laboratory of Isotopic Geology (LGI/UFRGS). Results were used to date the snow core and reconstruct climatic conditions at the site. TT-6 represents approximately 11 ± 6 months of precipitation, corresponding to a mean net snow accumulation rate of 0.19 ± 0.02 m per year in water equivalent. By analyzing non-sea-salt sulfate values, we identified a reference horizon related to Chile's 2011 Puyhue-Cordón volcanic eruption. Anions constitute 53.73% of the ionic content, with an acidic contribution of 25.62% from H+. Notably, 96.86% of calcium and 84.50% of sulfate originate from non-marine sources, while Na+ is predominantly a sea source. We observed elevated peaks in marine aerosols containing Cl- and Mg2+ during winter. Additionally, results from the ERA5 global model (NOAA) indicated that El Niño events may influence Antarctic temperatures, thereby facilitating the transport of marine aerosols to the continent.
