<description>Heterogeneidade do material particulado atmosférico MP2.5 e sua contribuição no potencial mutagênico e genotóxico
Particularmente, a retomada do estudo da área de referência levantou o questionamento sobre a existência de áreas que ainda possam ser consideradas de referência para poluição do ar causada por MP2.5.; Air pollution is currently one of the main environmental problems, and it is acknowledged as the main environmental threat to human health and quality of the environment. The sources of air pollution are predominantly related to human activities. Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a pollutant that consists of a heterogeneous mixture with a great variety of organic and inorganic substances. PM2.5 can penetrate the pulmonary alveoli damaging the health of humans and other living beings, affecting the functioning of ecosystems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of the inorganic and organic fractions of PM2.5 to the mutagenic/genotoxic potential of this pollutant in areas with different degrees of urbanization, under the influence of various levels of environmental stressors. The study was performed in two areas of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil): Santo Antônio da Patrulha and Porto Alegre. In Santo Antônio da Patrulha (considered a reference for atmospheric pollution, PM2.5 was collected between 2011 and 2012. The Porto Alegre study involved two samplings 2010-2011 and 2023-2024. Previous studies of mutagenicity and genotoxicity were performed in Santo Antonio da Patrulha and with the filters obtained Porto Alegre between 2010-2011, evaluating the organic fraction associated with PM2.5. In the current study, all the filters collected were submitted to aqueous extraction to obtain the water soluble fraction (WSF), having metals as markers, which have not yet been much evaluated in studies on mutagenicity and genotoxicity of PM2.5. Metals were quantified using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). WSF mutagenicity was evaluated using the Salmonella/microsome assay, utilizing strains TA98 and TA97a (sensitive to metals), that measure frameshift error, and TA102 (oxidative damage), that measure base-pair substitution type errors, with and without metabolic activation (S9 mix fraction). The WSF of the filters collected between 2010-2011 in Porto Alegre was also evaluated as to genotoxicity in the Comet and micronuclei assays, in V79 cell cultures. The filters collected between 2023 and 2024 in Porto Alegre were submitted to organic extraction, and the extracts were evaluated using the Salmonella/microsome assay with the TA98 (±S9) strain. In Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Al and Zn were the metals found at a higher concentration. In the Porto Alegre samples of the 2010-2011 period, the concentration of Zn was the higher one, followed by Cu. On the other hand, in the current sampling, Cu was higher, followed by Zn. In all areas evaluated a contribution of WSF was observed in the mutagenic potential of PM2.5, evidenced in the assays with specific strains (sensitive to metals and measuring oxidative damages) or elevating the responses already observed previously for the organic fraction of this pollutant, as occurred with samples from Santo Antônio da Patrulha and Porto Alegre (2023-2024). The presence of direct action (-S9) mutagens on the genetic material was predominant in the WSF samples from Santo Antônio da Patrulha, of the aqueous extracts of the old sampling from Porto Alegre and for the fraction of organic extracts of the current sampling (2023-2024). In all the WSF samples analyzed, there was a prevalence of damage by base pair substitution through oxidative stress, indicating that TA102 was the most sensitive among the strains utilized. In the evaluation of genotoxicity of the WSF of the Porto Alegre samples (2010-2011) with V79 cells, the Comet assay revealed significant damage to the DNA, which can be repaired, whereas in the micronuclei assay there was no significant increase in the frequency of irreversible damage, with chromosomal breaks or aneuploidies. Similar results were found for the organic fraction of the same samples evaluated in a previous study. Comparing the results obtained in the two Porto Alegre studies, a reduction was found in the air quality of the municipality. The results of this study show the need to broaden the evaluation of different fractions of compounds adsorbed to PM2.5, especially of WSF, associating chemical analyses and bioassays that evaluate the contribution in the mutagenic and genotoxic potential associated with these stressors. In particular, taking up the study of the area of reference again raised questions about the existence of areas that can still be considered of reference for air pollution caused by PM2.5.

É difícil inferir por qual motivo estas duas espécies apresentam uma relação mais clara, mas de uma forma geral, a relação positiva deve refletir situações em que a massa reflete o estado de saúde do indivíduo e consequentemente interfere na probabilidade de sobrevivência.; Allometric studies correspond to relationships between distinct scales, such as physiological and morphological characteristics of animals and plants relate with their body size in a predictable way, in addition to the mechanisms that generate these relationships. In this study we have tested the hypothesis that slighter individuals live shorter lives than the heavier ones. We have also evaluated the intraspecific and interspecific effects of body mass on survival. For that matter we have estimated the survival using the Cormack-Jolly-Seber model (CJS) and modeled the mass of measurements over time. There are two types of variation of the individuals’ mass: the intra-individual variation over time, and the variation between the individuals. To investigate the relationship between mass and survival, we’ve used a generalized linear mixed model that relates the random distribution of the dependent variable (survival) to the independent variable (mass) through a logit link function. To compare our results with values from the literature, we’ve obtained values of life expectancy (LE) and potential natural longevity (PNL) for each species, expressed in years. We haven’t found any evidence to support or reject the hypothesis that slighter individuals live shorter lives than heavier individuals. The parameter β1, that measures the linear relationship between logarithm of the mean mass of the species and survival logit, was -0.11 ± 0.10 (95% confidence interval (c.i) [-0.33, 0.08]). This estimate hasn’t been statistically different from zero. On the intraspecific level, the relationship between mass and survival was summarized by the hyper- parameter μβ2, which expresses the main value of the relationship between the individual mass deviation from the main mass of the species and the survival logit. This hyper-parameter was estimated at 0.16 ± 0.10 with 88.4% of its probability density above zero. However, looking at the c.i. 95% μβ2, it is not statistically different from zero. Although μβ2 is not statistically different from zero, among 52 species studied, 46 had a posterior distribution of β2 with an average above zero. Observing how the mass varies at interspecific level, the larger species present greater mass variation than the smaller species. However, there is no evidence of correspondence between the mass’ variability of the species and the estimation about the effects of the individual mass on survival (β2). For two species, Glyphorinchus spirurus and Formicarius colma, the positive relationship between the individual’s mass and the probability of survival was evident (β2 = 0.47 ± 0.27 for G. spirurus and 0.42 ± 0.27 for F. colma). Both species have presented relatively high coefficients about the mass’ variation, 6 and 7% respectively. These coefficients indicate a large mass variation between individuals, which may facilitate the observation of associated survival variations. It is not possible to infer the reasons why these two species have such a clear relationship, however, the positive relationship could show that the mass reflects the individuals’ condition, therefore, influences the probability of survival.

<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10183/309043</link>
The floater life strategy represents a behavioral response of animals to high population densities relative to resource availability. Individuals adopting this strategy are part of a territorial population but do not defend territories and exhibit broader movements than territorial individuals. Given that juvenile birds are poorer competitors than adults, it is assumed that they tend to adopt this strategy when population density increases. In this study, we investigated whether juveniles of three Amazonian understory bird species from the Thamnophilidae family (Willisornis poecilinotus, Gymnopithys rufigula, and Thamnomanes caesius) adopt floater behavior under different demographic densities. To estimate density and movement, we used a spatial capture-recapture model under a Bayesian approach. We analyzed data collected over three years (2014, 2015, and 2016) through mist-net captures. Willisornis poecilinotus showed the highest number of captures (n = 141), followed by T. caesius (n = 127), and G. rufigula with the lowest (n = 81). Age classes (juvenile/adult) were determined using the WRP method. The species with the highest movement parameter was the obligatory ant-follower G. rufigula (σmax = 11.54), while W. poecilinotus had the lowest value (σmin = 0.84). In terms of population density, the pattern was reversed: W. poecilinotus had the highest density (Dmax = 56.91 ind/km2), while G. rufigula had the lowest (Dmin = 8.14 ind/km2). The results indicate that increasing density appears to positively influence juvenile movement in W. poecilinotus and T. caesius, whereas in G. rufigula, the opposite pattern was observed, with increased density leading to greater movement among adults. We conclude that juveniles of W. poecilinotus and T. caesius exhibit floater behavior only under high-density conditions. These two species are considered more territorially aggressive interspecifically than G. rufigula, which may explain why their juveniles adopt the floater life strategy.

<title>Dinâmica de sucessão em Mosaico Campo-Floresta no Parque Natural Morro do Osso</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10183/309016</link>
Neves, Pedro Ubatan Camargo
Esta segunda alternativa, no entanto, implica na perda da biodiversidade campestre e também de possibilidades de educação ambiental e de recreação na natureza para a população urbana.; Forest-Grassland mosaics can be observed in various parts of the globe, including under subtropical climate in the South-Brazilian grassland region. Changes in temperature and humidity in recent years has caused the climate to allow the development of forests. It is well known that grassland requires management with fire or grazing so that they are maintained. The present work sought to observe the succession processes that occurred in former grassland areas after exclusion of management, in Morro do Osso Natural Park, in the southern part of the city of Porto Alegre. The park with a non-management policy was created approximately 30 years ago. Aerial images of the park of 2002 and 2013 years were analyzed, and it was possible to clearly notice the advancement of the vegetation physiognomies of Forest and two transitional shrubby stages of vegetation over grasslands, and consequently the loss of the grassland phytophysiognomy. Additionally, we conducted, in 2018 a survey of the woody vegetation, which also evidenced the advance of woody species over areas considered grasslands in the 2002 images. Clearly, the current conservation strategy does not preserve grassland biodiversity. The park is located in an urban context, which should also be considered in terms of conservation objectives for the population and the city. Options are either to preserve the mosaics, using active management, or to avoid human interventions and leave nature to follow its natural course. This last option, however, brings the risk of losing biodiversity and also possibilities for environmental conservation and nature recreation for urban populations.
