A crescente preocupação com o meio ambiente e as emissões atmosféricas, principalmente o CO2, alavancaram uma necessidade de se estudar formas de reduzir a emissão destes gases. A crescente preocupação com o meio ambiente e as emissões atmosféricas, principalmente o CO2, alavancaram uma necessidade de se estudar formas de reduzir a emissão destes gases. As microalgas são uma grande alternativa neste sentido. Elas metabolizam o CO2 durante a fotossíntese, e, como uma vantagem adicional, ainda são capazes de produzir subprodutos de alto valor agregado, como biodiesel e pigmentos, entre outros. Em revisão bibliográfica, constatou-se que meios de cultivo de microalgas suplementados com nitrogênio apresentam maiores crescimentos de biomassa formada, chegando-se ao valor máximo de 5 g.L-1, enquanto meios não suplementados formam aproximadamente 0,35 g.L-1 . Este trabalho visa testar a suplementação do meio de cultivo de microalgas das espécies Dunaliella tertiolecta e Chlorella sp com três diferentes sais de nitrato, o nitrato de amônio (NH4NO3), o nitrato de potássio (KNO3) e o nitrato de sódio (NaNO3), e verificar se existe diferença entre o uso de cada sal, quanto ao crescimento de biomassa e quanto à formação de carotenoides. Para a espécie Chlorella sp, o nitrato de sódio apresentou maior crescimento de biomassa, maior biomassa final e maior acúmulo de carotenóides, em relação aos demais nitratos. Para a espécie Dunaliella tertiolecta os três sais não apresentaram diferença significativa entre si.
