A foto apresenta a fachada do prédio do Instituto Ginasial Júlio de Castilhos com batalhão de alunos do Instituto. O Instituto Ginasial Julio de Castilhos foi fundado em 1900 pela Escola de Engenharia com o objetivo de oferecer um curso elementar direcionado aos exames para ingresso no curso superior. Chamou-se primeiramente Ginásio do Rio Grande do Sul até 1908 quando recebeu o nome de Júlio de Castilhos. O prédio foi construído pouco depois e, em 1909 já abrigava o curso. No fim da década de 1930, desdobrou-se em Ginásio Julio de Castilhos e Colégio Universitário, o que com a Reforma do Ensino em 1942, acabou sendo desfeito, unindo-se os dois cursos no agora Colégio Júlio de Castilhos.O projeto arquitetônico era de Manoel Itaqui. O prédio foi destruído por um incêndio em 1951. Neste local, já em 1952 iniciou-se a construção do atual prédio da Faculdade de Ciências Econômicas.Original
