Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

The current study, conducted from literature review, aims to write about the distal carpal ligaments in horses, dealing with the anatomy, structure, mechanical properties, composition, pathobiology, injuries and treatments. Lesions in those ligaments are very common in horses of all types, with consequent drop in performance or end of athletic career and thus generate losses for the horse industry. Clinical signs most often involve lameness in a wide range of degrees and swelling and localized pain. The diagnosis of these disorders is usually based on clinical examination and ultrasonography, but depending on the location and type of injury, other tests may be needed, such as radiography and anesthetic blocks. Treatment often involves rest and controlled exercise, and the use of medicines such as NSAIDs. In fact, treatment is a field on research and still needs improvement, so that an appropriate regenerative therapy can be reached in a way that the injured tissue can return to its original structure and functions. ...
