The following work aims at investigating the occurrence of intoxications induced by medications, pesticides and natural toxins (of both animal and vegetal origin) in cats and dogs. It is also intended to help approaching and diagnosing intoxicated patients, as well as preventing further intoxications. The main research used data from the Centro de Informações Toxicológicas do Rio Grande do Sul (CIT/RS), one of the few Brazilian Toxicological Information Centers qualified to provide assistance to small animals. All assistance entries between 2005 and 2009 were catalogued. From the available data it was found out that medications were responsible for most of the incidents (44%), followed by pesticides commonly used in fighting ectoparasites (22%) and by plants (19%). In spite of the lower incidence, toxicoses provoked by venomous animals (15%) were responsible for a considerably large number of serious accidents and deaths. ...
