Objectives: to review the literature on the theoretical epidemiological models on life course socioeconomic risk accumulation and critical periods, identifying the influence of the relationship between social conditions and illnesses in early life with the emergence of future oral diseases, including in adulthood. Studies with longitudinal design, which collected data from childhood to adulthood in a prospective manner and using the epidemiological model of life course socioeconomic trajectories are more likely to identify the periods of greatest impact on oral health and demonstrate the chain of risks over time. They showed that there is an accumulation of risks in disadvantaged socioeconomic groups in permanent birth or childhood for adulthood such groups (low-low) and that the risks in adulthood seem to be more important for the main outcomes of oral health. Results: The studies with longitudinal design, which collected data from childhood to adulthood in a prospective manner and using the epidemiological model of life course socioeconomic trajectories are more likely to identify the periods of greatest impact on oral health and demonstrate the chain of risks over time. According to the model of critical period, after mutual adjustment, education levels and parents themselves were independently associated with oral health. There was also a linear relationship between the number of periods of socioeconomic disadvantage and oral health, corresponding to the model of accumulation of risks. Gradual declines in oral health were apparent between the trajectories of social groups high-low and low-low and risks in adulthood seem to be more important for the main outcomes of oral health. Conclusion: The study of the life course seems to be a useful paradigm for understanding the disparities in oral health. He reveals the specific characteristics of each period in life and its complex biological pathways and behavioral changes related to socio-economic advantages or disadvantages that are associated with different levels of oral health in adulthood. ...
