Jane and the fairies : the presence of irish folklore in Jane Eyre

Abstract

Jane Eyre, publicado em 1847 por Charlotte Brontë, é um romance de formação que conta a história de uma menina órfã que enfrenta diversas dificuldades até crescer e conseguir formar um senso de identidade com o qual se sinta satisfeita. Os movimentos da personagem para alcançar este objetivo mesclam atitudes racionais com ações que são tomadas intuitivamente. Como se trata de um construto romântico, os elementos da história – enredo, cenário, atmosfera – se conformam aos movimentos e necessidades da protagonista. Este fato faz com que as referências, as imagens e os motivos apresentados na obra tenham forte carga simbólica. Assim, o objetivo desta monografia é examinar, entre tantos elementos alegóricos, aqueles que têm sua origem no folclore irlandês – uma tradição compartilhada tanto pela protagonista Jane Eyre quanto por sua autora Charlotte Brontë. O foco da pesquisa recai sobre a associação entre Jane Eyre e a figura do metamorfo (changeling), que representa estratégias pelas quais a personagem consegue contornar a clivagem entre seus desejos reprimidos e as imposições da sociedade. O trabalho se divide em duas partes. A primeira trata sobre o folclore irlandês e suas influências no imaginário britânico, com ligações para a biografia da autora. A segunda explora a influência deste folclore, na figura do changeling, sobre a construção da personagem Jane Eyre, observando ainda imagens feéricas ligadas ao relacionamento entre Jane e Rochester. Eu espero que esta monografia contribua para ressaltar a relevância do uso do folclore irlandês na obra Jane Eyre, como estratégia para contornar limitações impostas pelas rígidas regras de moralidade vitoriana.

Jane Eyre, published by Charlotte Brontë in 1847, is a Bildungsroman that narrates the story of an orphaned girl who faces several hardships until she grows up and succeeds in forming a sense of identity which satisfies her. The protagonist’s journey towards this goal involves a mixture of rational and intuitive actions and decisions. As a romantic construct, all the elements in the novel (plot, setting, atmosphere) conform to the moments and needs of the character. This fact endows the references, imagery, and motifs presented in the work with a strong symbolic weight. Thus, the objective of this monograph is to examine, among the many allegorical elements in the novel, those rooted in Irish folklore—a tradition shared both by the protagonist, Jane Eyre, and its author, Charlotte Brontë. The research focuses on the association between Jane Eyre and the figure of the changeling, as representative of the strategies through which the character navigates the clash between repressed desires and societal impositions. The work is structured in two parts. The first addresses Irish folklore and its influence on the British imagination, with links to the author's biography. The second explores the relationship between this folklore, particularly in the image of the changeling, in the construction of the character Jane Eyre. It also explores the use of fairy imagery in the relationship between Jane and Rochester. I hope this monograph contributes to highlight the uses of Irish folklore in Jane Eyre as a means of subverting the rigid moral rules of the Victorian era.
