A realização da lateral /L/ no inglês por falantes do português brasileiro

Abstract

Considerando que o /l/ do português brasileiro é normalmente vocalizado em coda silábica, nosso estudo buscou investigar se haveria transferência na aquisição do fonema lateral /l/ no inglês como segunda língua por falantes brasileiros. Para tanto, coletamos nossos dados com 25 estudantes da disciplina de Inglês VIII do curso de graduação em Letras do Instituto de Letras da UFRGS, que tiveram seu nível de inglês classificado de acordo com o Oxford Placement Test. Nossa revisão bibliográfica sobre aquisição de segunda língua nos permitiu observar que considerar toda e qualquer variação que ocorre na fala de um aprendiz de segunda língua (L2) como resultado de transferência da língua materna (L1) do falante constitui em um engano. Teorias da aquisição e trabalhos realizados nesta área puderam constatar que, além da transferência, outros fatores podem atuar nessas variações, como, por exemplo, processos de desenvolvimento interlinguístico e gramática interlinguística. Em nosso corpus foram consideradas as ocorrências de /l/ em coda e em núcleo de sílaba em formas-alvo extraídas da leitura de um texto, instrumento especialmente elaborado para fins desta pesquisa. Após analisar auditivamente nossos dados, com auxílio do programa Praat, e estatisticamente, a partir do programa Goldvarb X, os resultados que obtivemos revelaram que a vocalização de /l/ ocorreu em 49,2% das ocorrências. Este resultado indica comportamento distinto dos informantes na L2 da realização na sua variedade da língua materna. Das várias rodadas dos dados que realizamos, em nenhuma as variáveis linguísticas consideradas (contextos fonológicos precedente e seguinte) foram selecionadas. Foram selecionadas, porém, as variáveis sociais (sexo, nível de inglês e informante). Nossos resultados parecem indicar que há um processo de desenvolvimento interlinguístico operando na aquisição de /l/ no inglês como segunda língua pelos informantes da presente pesquisa.

Whereas Brazilian Portuguese /l/ is usually vocalized in coda, our study investigated whether there was transfer in the acquisition of the lateral phoneme /l/ in English as a second language by Brazilian speakers. Aiming that, we collected our data with 25 students of the discipline of English VIII in the undergraduate course of Languages in the Instituto de Letras in UFRGS, who had their English level classified according to the Oxford Placement Test. Our literature review on foreign language acquisition has allowed us to observe that considering each and every change that occurs in the speech of a second language learner as a transfer result of the speaker’s native language (L1) is a mistake. Acquisition theories and previous works in this field have noted that, besides the transfer, other factors can influence these variations, for instance, interlinguistic development processes and interlinguistic grammar. In our corpus were considered productions of /l/ in coda and nucleus syllable position in target-forms drawn from a text reading, an instrument specially developed for this research. After analyzing our data auditorily, using the program Praat, and statistically, using the program Goldvarb X, the results obtained showed that the vocalization of /l/ occurred in 49.2% of the cases. This result indicates a different behavior of the informants in the second language from that in their mother tongue. We did several data runs, although in none of them the linguistic variables considered (preceding and following phonological contexts) were selected. Were selected, however, the social variables (gender, English level and informant). Our results seem to indicate that there is an interlinguistic development process operating in the acquisition of English /l/ as a second language by the informants of this research.
