O uso de técnicas do jornalismo Open Source nas Visual Investigations do New York Times : a reportagem sobre a unidade russa que matou dezenas em Bucha

Abstract

Este trabalho de pesquisa tem como objetivo a análise do papel das técnicas de jornalismo Open Source na apuração da reportagem intitulada “Caught on Camera, Traced by Phone: The Russian Military Unit That Killed Dozens in Bucha”, produzida pela equipe de Visual Investigations (VI) do New York Times. Para tanto, foi executada uma pesquisa qualitativa, utilizando da técnica de entrevista em profundidade com quatro jornalistas que trabalharam na equipe ou diretamente na realização do projeto, com foco na rotina produtiva da apuração. A partir da contextualização realizada por meio do resgate histórico do movimento Open Source, das pesquisas com uso de Osint e do jornalismo investigativo, buscou-se entender as principais técnicas de Open Source Intelligence (Osint) utilizadas pela equipe do NYT; avaliar a eficácia dessas técnicas em relação às abordagens tradicionais de jornalismo e examinar como a equipe incorporou essas técnicas na reportagem. A partir das respostas obtidas por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, conclui-se que o uso de apuração Open Source nesta reportagem foi comparativamente menor do que a equipe costuma aplicar, mas que, mesmo assim, foi responsável por permitir a obtenção de informações que seguiriam veladas se tais técnicas não fossem aplicadas. Além disso, foi destacado que o ímpeto dos jornalistas entrevistados em cobrir eventos que tensionam ou violam os direitos humanos, é a responsabilização dos criminosos. Por fim, foram explicitados e elencados diversos dos processos e decisões tomadas pelos jornalistas envolvidos na produção desse vídeo, desde técnicas convencionais e consolidadas, quanto experimentais e inovadoras.

The aim of this research paper is to analyze the role of Open Source journalism techniques in investigating the story entitled “Caught on Camera, Traced by Phone: The Russian Military Unit That Killed Dozens in Bucha”, produced by the New York Times Visual Investigations (VI) team. To this end, qualitative research was carried out, using the technique of in-depth interviews with four journalists who worked on the team or directly on the project, focusing on the productive routine of the investigation. Based on a historical overview of the Open Source movement, research using Osint and investigative journalism, the aim was to understand the main Open Source Intelligence (Osint) techniques used by the NYT team; to assess the effectiveness of these techniques in relation to traditional journalism approaches and to examine how the team incorporated these techniques into their reporting. Based on the responses obtained through semi-structured interviews, it was concluded that the use of Open Source investigation in this report was comparatively less than the team usually applies, but that, even so, it was responsible for allowing information to be obtained that would have remained veiled if such techniques had not been applied. In addition, it was pointed out that the impetus for the journalists interviewed in covering events that tension or violate human rights is to hold the criminals accountable. Finally, the following were explained and listed, ranging from conventional and consolidated techniques to experimental and innovative ones.
