The industry of broiler breeders, and other segments, has become extremely relevant due to the supply of eggs that will become future broilers. Fertile eggs, when supplied to hatcheries, undergo numerous processes to maintain quality and viability in incubation, and a determining factor for quality directly linked to embryonic mortality is storage time. The objective of the project was to apply a short period of incubation during egg storage (SPIDES) in eggs stored for 10 days. The SPIDES involves giving incubation stimuli by subjecting the eggs to heating and cooling for a certain period, aiming at the maintenance of germ cells in fertile eggs. The experiment was conducted in a commercial hatchery. Eggs were obtained from COBB broiler breeder hens housed in commercial farms. Two experimental treatments were used in the study: Test, using SPIDES; and Control, without the use of SPIDES, in a completely randomized design, with 7 replicates. Half of the eggs were used in the Test group and the other half in the Control group, stored at 18°C with automatic turning and, after the storage time, subjected to 6 hours of SPIDES, heating for 2 hours to 32°C and starting the cooling process after 4 hours of incubation. The SPIDES treatment was carried out on the 5th day of storage. On the 10th day, eggs were incubated according to industrial incubation standards. Early mortality, hatchability, and number of infertile eggs were evaluated at the end of the incubation period. After data collection, it was found that there was no significant difference in hatchability and early mortality (P > 0.05). However, there was a difference between unhatched eggs (P < 0.05) and a tendency towards a decrease in late embryonic mortality (P < 0.10). Despite a significant difference for unhatched eggs, this study showed that in 0 to 10 d storage period, there was no substantial improvement in hatchability, these being the main point aimed by large commercial hatcheries. ...
