Uma etnografia da mobilidade internacional de senegaleses em Porto Alegre (RS, Brasil) e Atlanta (GA, Estados Unidos)

Abstract

Esta tese tem por tema a mobilidade humana internacional, abordando-a a partir de relações antropológicas desenvolvidas com imigrantes senegaleses residentes nas regiões metropolitanas de Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil) e Atlanta (Geórgia, Estados Unidos). A pergunta de pesquisa do trabalho é a seguinte: “como os senegaleses contatados narravam e praticavam suas mobilidades internacionais no contexto em que foram contatados?”. O presente trabalho aborda tal pergunta por meio da articulação entre Estudos Migratórios e Antropologia Econômica. Os interlocutores da pesquisa tomavam suas mobilidades tanto como experiências majoritariamente individuais de amadurecimento masculino quanto como atos de valor religioso, porque sentido como um autossacrifício em prol de melhores condições econômicas nas vidas dos familiares residentes no Senegal. Argumenta-se que a promoção de relações interseccionais reflexivas com sujeitos locais a Porto Alegre e Atlanta, a superação de desafios ligados a posições de trabalho vulneráveis, e a vivência da dahira como o principal eixo de solidariedade comunitária são partes fundamentais destes entendimentos de mobilidade expressos pelos interlocutores. As técnicas de pesquisa empregadas para a investigação desses fenômenos foram as de observação participante, conversas informais e entrevistas semiestruturadas, focadas nos modos pelos quais os sujeitos contatados narravam e viviam seus cotidianos enquanto imigrantes.

This dissertation is themed around human international mobility, approaching it through anthropological relationships developed with male Senegalese immigrants in the metropolitan areas of Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) and Atlanta (Georgia, United States). This work’s research question is the following: “how did the contacted Senegalese immigrants narrated and practiced their international mobilities in the context in which they were contacted?”. The present dissertation deals with this question through the articulation of Migration Studies and Economic Anthropology. The research’s interlocutors took their mobilities both as subjective experiences of masculine maturation and as an attitude embedded with religious value, because it is taken as a self-sacrifice for better economic conditions in the lives of their relatives living in Senegal. It is argued that the promotion of reflexive intersectional relationships with locals in Porto Alegre and Atlanta, the overcoming of challenges related to vulnerable work positions, and the experiencing of the dahira as the main hub for building community solidarity are fundamental parts of such understandings of mobility expressed by the interlocutors. The research techniques used for the investigation of these phenomena were participant observation, informal conversations and semistructured interviews, focused on how the contacted people narrated and lived their everyday lives as immigrants.
