Cidadã de segunda classe : as percepções de uma nigeriana analisadas pelo viés do pós-colonialismo

Abstract

A presente monografia analisa o romance Cidadã de Segunda Classe [Second Class Citizen] da escritora nigeriana Buchi Emecheta, publicado em 1974. A obra aborda a vida de Adah, uma mulher nigeriana que, quando jovem, busca melhores condições para si, e que, depois de adulta, quer o mesmo para os seus cinco filhos. Após lutar contra os preceitos do seu povo e da família de seu marido, ela consegue migrar com os filhos de Lagos para Londres, onde o esposo está estudando, na esperança de uma vida melhor. Lá, a personagem se confronta com o racismo e conhece as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos novos cidadãos em um país que ainda retém vários traços imperialistas. A análise aqui feita do romance se apoia predominantemente em ideias propostas pela teórica pós-colonialista e feminista Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak no seu livro Pode o Subalterno Falar? [Can the Subaltern Speak?]. O foco da pesquisa recai sobre as percepções da protagonista ao comparar as sociedades nigeriana e inglesa. Ao relacionar as impressões de Adah com a teoria de Spivak sobre Subalternidade, busca-se identificar o processo através do qual o indivíduo feminino proveniente de um país colonizado passa a se conhecer e a se expressar através da literatura. Sabe-se que a contemplação do ponto de vista dos povos subalternizados no continente africano, por parte da elite letrada, é recente. Por isso, ao final desta pesquisa, busca-se compreender se, como, ou até que ponto o sujeito subalterno feminino pode se encontrar e erguer sua voz por meio da literatura. Contudo, mesmo após esse processo ocorrer, corre-se o risco de a voz encontrada ainda assim ser ignorada ou abafada, e suas reivindicações esquecidas. Daí a importância de esses textos serem estudados e divulgados por pesquisadores e introduzidos ou reintroduzidos em academia e escolas.

This monograph analyzes the novel Second Class Citizen, written by the Nigerian writer Buchi Emecheta and published in 1974. The protagonist in the novel is Adah's life, a Nigerian woman who, when young, searches for better conditions for herself. When she reaches adulthood, Adah wants the same for her five children. After fighting against the prejudice of her people and her husband's family, she decides to migrate with her children from Lagos to London (where her husband is studying), in the hope of a better life. There, the character is confronted with racism and learns the difficulties that new citizens encounter in a country that still retains several imperialist traits. The analysis here made of the novel relies predominantly on ideas proposed by the Post-colonialist and Feminist theorist Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak in her book Can the Subaltern Speak? The reading here provided focuses on the protagonist's perspectives as she compares Nigerian and English societies. When we relate Adah's impressions to Spivak's theory about Subalternity, we can identify the process a female individual from a colonized country goes through as she strives to understand things and to express herself throughout literature. The contemplation of the African subaltern people's point of view by the literate elite is a relatively recent event. Therefore, at the end of this research, we aim to understand if, how, or to what point the subaltern female subject can find and raise her voice through literature. However, even after this process is accomplished, there are chances that this voice found may be ignored or repressed, and that her claims may be forgotten. Hence, the more important it becomes to research and study about such texts, and disseminate them, as well as to introduce or reintroduce them in schools and academic environments.
