dc.description.abstract | Roberta Flores Pedroso descreve Carolina Maria de Jesus(1914-1977), autora de Quarto de despejo (1960), como “mulher negra, pobre, semialfabetizada e migrante” que “se tornou um fenômeno editorial”. Na tentativa de estabelecer um contexto anglófono para a leitura comparativa de Quarto de despejo, este artigo apresenta cinco autoras negras, anglófonas, de países periféricos, nascidas entre 1904 e 1924, e analisa de quais maneiras os termos pobre, semialfabetizada, migrante e fenômeno editorialdevem ser relativizados para poder fazer a comparação. As autoras são Oodgeroo Noonuccal (1920-1993) e Faith Bandler (1918-2015), da Austrália; Ellen Kuzwayo (1914-2006), da África do Sul, e Una Marson (1905-1965)e Louise Bennett (1919-2006), da Jamaica. | pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | This article seeks to establish an English-language context for a comparative reading of Quarto de despejo (1960),by Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914-1977), published in 1962 in New Yorkunder the title Child of the Dark,andin London asBeyond All Pity. Roberta Flores Pedrosodescribes de Jesus as a “poor, semi-schooled Black migrant woman” who became a publishing phenomenon. This article presents five Black women authors, writing in English, born between 1904 and 1924 in countries beyond the centers of power in the North Atlantic, and discusses the ways in which the terms poor, semi-schooled, migrantand publishing phenomenonneed to be relativized in order to make the comparison.
