Hydrophobically modified polyacrylamides are widely applied in enhanced oil recovery, which is an indispensable energy source. The main objective of this work is the synthesis and characterization of hydrophobically modified polyacrylamides with oligo (lactide). Oligo(lactide) macromonomers with five repetitive units were synthesized through the lactide ring opening polymerization using hydroxyethyl acrylamide as initiator at 130 °C for 2 h. The macromonomers were further copolymerized with acrylamide by conventional radical polymerization at 40 °C for 24 h in two different solvent mixtures: tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water and methanol (MeOH)/water. Copolymers with 2, 5 and 10 mol % of oligo (lactide) were obtained with quantitative incorporation of macromonomer, yields higher than 65 % and molar masses in the order of 104 g mol-1 for the THF/water reaction mixture. In the MeOH/water reaction mixture, copolymers with 2, 5 and 10 mol % of oligo (lactide) showed less macromonomer incorporation, yields above 78 % and molar masses in the order of 105 g mol-1. Homopolymers of acrylamide were synthesized under the same reaction conditions as the copolymers. The copolymers’ dynamic viscosities were higher than pure polyacrylamides. The copolymers prepared in MeOH/water showed values 500 % higher than them obtained in THF/water medium, which indicates that the copolymers synthesized in MeOH/water would be more appropriate for the final application.en
