The present study researches the Brazilian presidential election that occurred between the years of 1909 and 1910, taking as a starting point the History of Masculinities and Press History. Therefore, the election that opposed the presidential candidates Hermes da Fonseca and Rui Barbosa is analyzed from a gender perspective, seeking to understand how the press sources represented the candidates in terms of masculinity. To this end, the humor magazines Careta and O Malho were chosen as sources, within which the cartoons and their iconographic humor were specifically studied. Looking at cartoons as representations, a concept developed by Roger Chartier, it was observed the development, by the sources, of representations of masculinities that exalted the presidential candidates defended by each of the selected magazines. Thinking about masculinities as a plural concept, from authors such as Raewyn Connell and James Messerschmidt, more than that, it was observed how two different models of hegemonic masculinities were created, in ways considered adequate to exercise masculinity to control the social tensions of their time. The concepts were established according to the magazine's interpretations of different social changes of the Republic, such as the political rise of minorities. Defending Rui Barbosa, Careta brought representations that defended civil masculinity; unlike O Malho, a supporter of Hermes, which created representations favorable to a model of militaristic masculinity for society. ...
