Acute respiratory tract infections have a high prevalence, high mortality and are among the main public health problems in Brazil. Antimicrobial therapy is the main pharmacological intervention in non-self-limiting infectious diseases. In late 2019, with the identification of COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, there was an increase in bacterial infections secondary to viral infection. In this context, an increase in antimicrobial prescriptions for these conditions has been observed. Considering the relevance of the topic, the objective of this study was to analyze the sale of antimicrobials (ATMs) subject to revenue retention with indication for the treatment of respiratory infections in Brazil in the period from 2014 to 2021. For this purpose, the capture and analysis of data from the National Controlled Product Management System (SNGPC) was used, observing the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of these drugs. This is an ecological study of mixed design developed from information obtained from the SNGPC: total presentations sold, which will be presented in the following equation: annual or quarterly number of antimicrobial presentations sold for each macro-region of Brazil / annual number of population of each macro-region *1,000 inhabitants. Annual data were analyzed using Prais Winsten's generalized regression (STATA) and quarterly data were analyzed using progressive automatic regression, being considered significant when the P value<0.05 were reached. From this study, it is shown that the South macro-region (71.43% of the 21 ATMs) recorded the highest average consumption rates in relation to the other macro-regions. In the annual analysis (2014 to 2020), the proportion of stability, increase and decrease in ATMs consumption was similar between macro-regions. The quarterly analysis (January 2020 to June 2021) recorded an increase in the consumption of Amoxicillin, Amoxicillin+Clavulanate, Azithromycin and Cephalexin, together, in the South, Southeast and North macro-regions. Thus, the data from this study reveal an increase in the consumption of some ATMs during the COVID-19 pandemic period in specific macro-regions of Brazil, such as the South and Southeast and, in general, some stability in the North, contributing to the increase in Pharmacovigilance knowledge related to antimicrobials prescribed in the fight against bacterial infections. ...
