This paper deals with extreme body modifications practices, which radically change the shape and the image of the body, such as tattoos, piercings, brandings, scarification, reamers, nullifications, among others. The objective of this research is to understand and interpretate what are the meanings of the body for people who are devotees of extreme body modifications, as well as the socio-cultural influences that lead some young people to perform such practices and about the behavior of these people. To realize these aims, a collective study was chosen, with semi-structured interviews treated as narratives, besides a field observation. Because these people present significant differences compared to the standard body socially acceptable, these individuals end up suffering prejudice and pressure (directly or not) to fit their bodies to the standard, making it clear that the so-called "free speech" collides with not well seen forms of control, but they are very precise. Some young people use this type of body modification as a way to show that they belong to certain urban tribes, to identify themselves with the other components of these groups, however one of the main objectives to perform extreme body modifications is to build an identity, which is created based on the differences from the other individuals. For these people, their body becomes a project, that is built to form the identity, to express themselves, to increase the self-esteem, among others, and often ends up becoming a project without an end. Interpreting the answers of the interviewees was possible to understand that they perform extreme body modifications in order to differentiate themselves from others, to build an identity, to search for their individuality, to feel beautiful, besides to show that they belong to an urban tribe, as well as telling stories of their lives and express themselves through art, to communicate, overcoming limits and also representing these practices represent a rite of passage.en
