Análise tradutória de "Silence – a fable" à luz do "Trivium" da Irmã Miriam Joseph : uma abordagem para os estudos de tradução

Abstract

O presente estudo de caso objetiva investigar se há (e quais seriam os) conteúdos que o Trivium tem a oferecer como referencial teórico para estudantes (de Letras). Caso essa hipótese seja confirmada, em seguida será desenvolvida uma possível abordagem tendo o Trivium como bibliografia base utilizada para analisar diferentes traduções de um mesmo texto, levando-se em conta ser o Trivium uma preciosidade. Dado que se trata de uma bibliografia com conhecimentos sobre linguagem – e tradução – que datam desde Platão e Aristóteles, passando pela Roma Antiga e pela Idade Média, ele pode contribuir para a formação de futuros estudantes (de Letras). Por meio da abordagem de alguns conteúdos do Trivium, demonstrar-se-á se, que e como esse manual de escrita criativa pode auxiliar em uma reflexão tradutória logicamente descritível. Para isso, são analisados diferentes trechos de três traduções do conto "Silence – a fable", de Edgar Allan Poe. Escrito em 1835, "Silence" é um de seus contos cujo conteúdo é tão misterioso que dá margem para diversas interpretações, principalmente por suas referências e alusões culturais e religiosas. A escolha do conto se justificou por esse elemento ser decisivo para sua compreensão e consequente tradução, e por ser um dos contos de Poe menos conhecidos no Brasil. Realizada entre fevereiro e julho de 2017 foi uma tradução de minha autoria de "Silence", iniciativa feita no contexto de uma iniciação científica no ano de 2017, cujo viés teórico inicial era a Teoria do Ritmo de Henri Meschonnic. É descrito como se deu o processo tradutório daquela época, sob as luzes, agora, no entanto, do Trivium, o qual me ajudou a compreender melhor a postura teórica de Meschonnic e a compreender de maneira mais ampla a linguagem e a tradução, em seus mais diversos aspectos. E, sugestivamente, o papel e as exigências de um tradutor diante do(s) texto(s) que tem para traduzir, que vão muito além de competências ou habilidades linguísticas, tradutórias, discursivas, gramaticais ou operacionais. Pode-se depreender, desta monografia, que a linguagem/tradução é complexa por si só por envolver o exercício simultâneo de gramática, de lógica e de retórica entre duas ou mais pessoas em uma ou mais línguas diferentes e, principalmente, por ser difícil conciliar a "porcentagem", pode-se dizer assim, da conotação e da denotação de cada palavra em um idioma. O reconhecimento desse conflito paradoxal é o início da carreira do tradutor – independente de sua carreira ser científica, técnica, literária ou acadêmica. Minhas expectativas são de que se possa continuar abordando esta área de estudos e refletir mais sobre a linguagem e sobre a tradução a partir dela, buscando a contínua melhora do curso de Letras como um todo, o tom deste trabalho. Meu desejo é de que a comunidade acadêmica possa fazer bom uso deste trabalho, gerando bons frutos para futuros estudantes.

This case study aims to investigate whether and which contents the Trivium has to present as theoretical background for (Languages) students. Assuming that this hypothesis is correct, a possible approach will be developed having the Trivium as foundation used to analyze different translations of a text, taking into account the preciosity of the Trivium. Given that it is a language knowledge-based – and translation-based – bibliography whose amounts of knowledge registered since Plato and Aristotle, going to Old Rome and to the Middle Ages, it may contribute to the progress of future (Languages) students. Through the approach of some ideas of the Trivium, it will be demonstrated whether, that and how this creative writing manual might support to create a logically comprehensible reflection of translation practice. In order to do that, different excerpts of three translations of the short story "Silence – a fable" of Edgar Allan Poe are analyzed. Written in 1835, "Silence" is one of Poe’s short stories whose content is such a mystery that it is open to many interpretations, mainly for its cultural and religious references and allusions. The choice for this story is justified for this is influential to its comprehension and later translation and for it is one of Poe’s stories less known in Brazil. A "Silence" translation of my authorship was made between February and July of 2017 in the context of an undergraduate Scientific Initiation scholarship whose initial theoretical background was Henri Meschonnic’s Rhythm Theory. In this paper it is described how the translation process of that time was like, now in the view of Trivium ideas, which helped me to understand better Meschonnic’s theoretical approach and to understand widely language and translation in their multiple aspects. Also, suggestively, the role and the requirements of the translator in face of the text(s) (s)he has to translate, which are more than just linguistic, translation, discourse, grammatical or operational competences or abilities. From this monography it can be inferred that language/translation is complex per se for it involves the simultaneous exercise of grammar, logic and rhetoric between two or more people in one or more different languages and, mainly, for it is difficult to conciliate the "percentage" (if it can be said that) of each word’s connotation and denotation in a language. The acknowledgement of this paradoxical conflict is the beginning of the translation career – independently whether it is scientific, technic, literary or academic. My expectations are that more works about this knowledge field and that more reflections about language and translation based on the Trivium might be done, seeking the continuous improvement of our Languages course as a whole, which is the tone of this work. My wish is that the Academic community might benefit from this paper through other students’ works.
