| pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | The present work consists of a comparative analysis of excerpts from the translations of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, made by Barbara Heliodora, José Francisco Botelho and Beatriz Viégas-Faria. The initial task of analysis is to identify the procedures carried out by these professionals, as well as the prosodic effects of their choices, according to the Theory of Natural Equivalence as proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1977). The main objective of this work is to unravel the act of translation and demystify it, especially in respect to the translation of poetry, since translation is simultaneously an art and a science with its own procedures. To do so, four sonnets were chosen, which are written in iambic pentameter. Considering that the iambic pentameter is not the predominant form for sonnets in the Portuguese language, these excerpts represent a potential source of inequivalence. The thesis proposed is that the equivalence is maintained at some level, and that experienced translators prioritize different aspects at different moments. We hope that less experienced translators can benefit from this research in the sense that, by understanding translation procedures, one can determine one’s goals, and even break parameters, when translating. In addition, we stress the relevance of Vinay and Darbelnet’s studies as a didactic tool, as demonstrated by Anthony Pym (2017), and that it can be used to assist in translation studies. | en |
